These two collections are usually taken in the spring\, but this spring was exceptionally strange and chaotic for me\, so we postponed them. DESCRIPTION:With the Federal Government shutdown entering its fourth week\, there is a significant and devastating threat to the food security for the most vulnerable\, our youth\, seniors and families.  LA County Parks is (and has been) a critical part of the food safety net services in 48 Parks\, 16 Teen Centers and 9 Senior centers and programs. \nTo support this dire situation with the loss of SNAP and CalFresh and critical food access impacting Los Angeles County residents\, LA County Parks is leaning in to expand capacity to its Food Programs at Parks! \nLA County Parks provides the following food safety net services programs for youth\, teens and seniors. These food programs are \n\nFree Healthy Snack Program for youth at 48 parks (Monday thru Friday @ 3pm-4pm) – ages 17 and under.\nFree Hot Supper (Dinner) Program at Our SPOT Teen Centers for teens at 16 parks (Monday thru Friday @ 7pm) – ages 12 to 18 years old.\nFree Senior Food Program for older adults at 9 parks (Monday thru Friday) – age 55+

Of anticipating. Of quiet excitement. This Advent our theme is Surprising New Birth. Despite what we may see in the news\, I see newness and hope and plans for bright future popping up all over the place. This Advent we will be reading through the scriptures about the birth of Jesus\, but especially the surprise of newness. So many of the passages describe the surprise of a new birth\, either impending or just delivered. This news is always a surprise\, and yet the way that the angels or prophets deliver the news and to whom is incredibly meaningful. \nIn our modern context\, whether we are single moms\, newly engaged\, old men well past child-bearing age\, the lowest class of peasant\, an immigrant living in fear\, or a powerful political player (on either side of the aisle)\, the stories of Jesus’ birth have much to teach us about God’s surprising gift of hope\, peace\, joy\, and love throughout history and during this season\, especially. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

The Word of God incarnate is a phrase that is\nthrown around a lot\, but what does it really mean? What do Christians actually believe?\nDoes it even matter anymore? The answer to all of these questions runs deeper and\nspeaks to today’s society much more than most people realize. John’s gospel and\ndescription of Jesus coming into the world answers much of the religious and political\npropaganda we are seeing these days\, and it answers them with love\, light\, and clarity. \nPlease join us this Sunday as we dive deep into the word to discover the Word. \nOn 12/21 and 12/24 we will be taking a collection for the United Church of Christ\nChristmas Fund. DESCRIPTION:Hello everyone\, \nIt is always jarring for me to leap from Jesus’ birth on Christmas Day to Jesus being visited by the Magi on Epiphany to Jesus suddenly being an adult being baptized by John\, who is also an adult. Only a few weeks ago\, we were reading about John kicking in Elizabeth’s womb\, and now this dynamic duo are suddenly the center of a spectacle involving thousands of people in the heart of the nation’s capital. All of a sudden\, John the Baptist is taking on the tax collectors\, the Pharisees\, the Sagisees\, the Roman military\, and random people living in the city. Why did Jesus start this ritual of baptism\, and what does it mean? Why did he choose such a public forum? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nOn the heels of Jesus’ baptism\, he and John the Baptist leap into action. John keeps pointing out Jesus and telling the story of their calls. With John’s help\, Jesus immediately begins gathering disciples. Amidst all of this activity\, everyone begins acquiring new names: the Voice\, the Word\, the Lamb of God\, the Baptist\, the Rock\, the Messiah. And we see familiar images such as the dove\, the rock\, the river\, the lamb\, and the fire. None of this is accidental\, and none of this is insignificant. These images \ncarry powerful meanings and traditions\, as do the names that are revealed and bestowed. As we began to learn last Sunday when we read about Jesus’ baptism\, this river and this moment is a liminal space where people are transformed and God is revealed. Please join us this Sunday as we unpack these ancient symbols and learn how God is continue to reveal our discipleship and our names today. \nA special thanks to Jim and all of the folks who helped us to sort and stow our Christmas decorations last week so that we can start the New Year with a fresh\, clear sanctuary and fellowship hall.
