I am so grateful to our wonderful team! \nAlso\, an extra special thank you to Josh Benson-Merron and all of his students for their wonderful music last Sunday. We collected $230 in donations for the Sack Lunch Program. See below for photos of this wonderful event. \nThis week we are reading one of the best-known passages of the Bible from the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Our theme this Advent is Emmanuel – God With Us\, and this is the third Sunday of Advent\, traditionally Love Sunday. How does the Gospel of John tie God With Us to Love and continue to speak to us today? We invite you to join us on Sunday to find out. \nThis Monday we will be gathering for Bible Study and continuing to put the Bible in perspective. We will dig into the story of Abraham and Isaac\, one of the most terrifying and misunderstood stories in the Bible. People have long wondered how to make sense of this story\, but when we put it into its context it reveals God’s plan for peace and an end to violence. Join us on Monday at 6 PM in-person on via Zoom to learn more. \nSAVE THE DATE \nDecember 24: Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols Service begins at 5 PM \nFellowship opportunities \nThe Knitting Ministry gathers for potluck brunch and crafting from 9 AM to Noon on December 14 and every second Saturday of the month. They came up with a ton of questions that we will tackle in upcoming weeks\, such as: \n– How did the American Church get Christianity so wrong? \n– What does the Bible say about disabilities and healing with prayer? How do we reconcile that with modern medicine? \n– What were Luther’s 99 Treatises all about\, and how has that shaped modern Christianity? \n– What is the basic timeline of Biblical HIstory? \n– Beauty and the wisdom literature in the Bible that talks about nature \n– Why is King David so revered when he behaved so badly? \n– Are there other entities and stories in the Bible that are not really what we have been told? \n– Creationism vs. Evolution \n– What are the canons and how did they get to be the way they are? Will there ever be a third cannon? \n– What are the ancient\, sacred covenants? What is a covenant\, anyway? \n– Are there parts of the Bible that are missing? Who chose what went into the BIble as it is\, and how did they choose? \n– Why do we have so many denominations\, and how did they all get created? \n– How do we reconcile “church law” with “state law?” \n– How do we reconcile “pure doctrine” with “realistic daily practice”? \nDo you have questions or passages that you would like to explore in an upcoming class? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis week Rev. Lisa Bove will be preaching on the two passages that inspired our theme this Advent: Emmanuel\, God with us. Isaiah the prophet used the name “Emmanuel” more than 500 years before Jesus was born. That same passage is cited in the book of Matthew over 600 years later when an angel appears to Joseph. Please join us we hear Rev. Lisa preach about how God is with us today and always. \nAs we approach the end of the year\, we are striving to meet our 2024 budget and plan for our 2025 budget. If you have a little extra you can donate\, we will graciously receive it. \nAs we prepare to enter 2025\, we remember that we are a loving community\, and our Mission statement is simple: \n No Condemnation here! We are a Loving Community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice.  \nWe have lived that out this past year by reaching our goal of 500 sack lunches distributed to the poor. We have striven to pay our employees fair and livable wages\, and we have held numerous fundraisers. \nWe continue to be a source of hope and assistance for those in crisis\, be they homeless desperately needing housing\, hungry needing a sack lunch\, injured needing medical assistance\, or grieving needing comfort and community. We have more and more new people who are organizing our various ministries with their gifts and passion. We have assembled and distributed more than 500 sack lunches\, exceeding our goal for 2024. We have gathered in fellowship and love in worship and after worship with numerous people donating delicious refreshments. We have gathered monthly to raise funds and share laughter in the Let My People Show. In Bible Study and in Sunday Worship\, we have dug into the most challenging of scriptures and found God’s loving and liberating spirit time and again. Our prayer group has met faithfully every Wednesday to pray for our community and our world. Our Care Team has lovingly sent hundreds of hand-written birthday and anniversary cards. We have knitted dozens of warm caps and scarves for the homeless in our knitting ministry. We have restored and updated our AIDS Memorial Quilt to remember our history as a justice-filled\, compassionate\, welcoming church when very few were. We have partnered with organizations like  Crisis and Incident Response through Community-led Engagement (CIRCLE)\, A 24/7 unarmed service for homeless people in L.A.\, Tree People of Beverly Hills\, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). \nEvery week we put our money where our mouth is and strive to make a difference for someone in the community. And we have done it together\, month after month\, with your generous donations of time\, talent\, and money. \nAs we approach the end of the year\, I ask that you prayerfully consider how you might continue to support us in our mission and goals as we strive to be a loving community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice with no condemnation. \nYou can always donate at wehoucc.org (click on GIVE) and set up recurring payments. I have set up recurring payments to come directly from my checking account every month because I know that the church isn’t charged transaction fees\, the church can rely on the donation even if I’m not there on a Sunday\, and the Treasurer and Council can use the predictability of the donations to make long-term budgeting plans. \nIn upcoming weeks we will be distributing pledge forms for those who want them\, as well. Watch for updates on our budget! \nIt makes me feel good every month to know that I am supporting such a wonderful church and all of its missions. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Advent our theme is “Emmanuel – God with us.” All year long we have been practicing St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Prayer of Examen during our centering moment. This is the exercise where we reflect back over the past 24 hours and examine how God was with us the entire time. The story of Jesus’ birth contains a myriad of familiar figures\, and God is with them all in very different ways. This Sunday we will read about the birth of John the Baptist – Jesus’ forerunner\, baptizer\, and good friend. There was nothing typical about John’s pregnancy or birth\, especially because God was with John\, his mother\, and his father. Come join us as we learn how God has been with our ancestors and continues to be with us today\, even when nothing is going the way we expect. \nThis past Monday in Bible Study we tackled the question “How did America get Christianity so wrong?” and had nine people in person and online. For the carpet\, Mark needs one small personal-sized carpet for his room. Any size will do. I am sure that they would also appreciate Christmas treats of your choosing. How do we reconcile that with modern medicine? \n– What were Luther’s 99 Treatises all about\, and how has that shaped modern Christianity? \n– What is the basic timeline of Biblical HIstory? \n– Beauty and the wisdom literature in the Bible that talks about nature \n– Why is King David so revered when he behaved so badly? \n– Are there other entities and stories in the Bible that are not really what we have been told? \n– Creationism vs. Evolution \n– What are the canons and how did they get to be the way they are? Will there ever be a third cannon? \n– What are the ancient\, sacred covenants? What is a covenant\, anyway? \n– Are there parts of the Bible that are missing? Who chose what went into the BIble as it is\, and how did they choose? \n– Why do we have so many denominations\, and how did they all get created? \n– How do we reconcile “church law” with “state law?” \n– How do we reconcile “pure doctrine” with “realistic daily practice”? \nDo you have questions or passages that you would like to explore in an upcoming class? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe holidays are upon us! This is that special time of year where ministers around the world prepare to tell their flock that the season is about Jesus\, not commercialism\, ad nauseum. We also like to remind our parishioners that we are in the season of Advent\, not Christmas\, and then argue whether the liturgical colors in the weeks leading up to Christmas are purple or Sarum blue. Finally\, on Rose Sunday\, when we light the pink rose candle and the priests wear pink rose vestments\, we argue whether a man wearing full-length pink rose dress robe vestment is still manly. Never one to question tradition\, I am warming and gearing up for the rigor of the next six weeks. \nHere’s the thing about the true nature of missing the point every year: Advent is about waiting. It’s about anticipating. It’s about delayed gratification. It’s about the fact that there is nothing\, nothing you can do to make it get here faster\, and nothing that will stop it from coming even if we’re not ready. Thanksgiving is such a wonderful beginning to the holidays because it is about thankfulness and togetherness and a time when folks who were enemies put aside their differences to eat together – or at least that’s the story we’re told. But then we launch into Black Friday like a horse out of a starting gate and we forget that we’re actually waiting quietly and noticing. \nWe are allowing the details of the brokenness of the world to come into sharp focus around us and wait in anticipation for God’s perfectly-timed gift and solution. So I’m not going to tell you not to sing Christmas carols early or shop til you drop or even decorate in red\, white\, and green during Advent. What I am going to do is invite you to notice the things that make you sad\, or worried\, or frightened\, and wait for God’s perfect intervention. Because if you do this\, you’ll be in good company. The ancient peoples like Mary and Joseph and the folks in Jerusalem and Galilee and Rome all hustled and bustled\, too. They shopped til they dropped and dressed in garish\, out-of-season colors and sang songs in the wrong month and argued what men and women and even priests should or should not wear. They debated appropriate liturgical colors and rituals\, too. But they also were surrounded by circumstances that saddened them\, worried them\, and frightened them. And they trusted that God would intervene and provide a solution. They waited. They waited in anticipation of the fulfilment of the same words of Isaiah that we read every Christmas Advent: \nThen Isaiah said: ‘Hear then\, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals\, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look\, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son\, and shall name him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:13-14) \nNow is a time to consciously turn all of your weariness over to God as you go about all of your regular Christmas Advent Holiday activities. Don’t sweat whether you are doing the holidays right or wrong. Trust that sometimes\, everything is wrong\, and God will make it right. \nThis Sunday we will be studying a passage from Paul’s letter to the Romans\, about how God is in fact making everything right whether you notice it or not\, and all will in fact be all right regardless of any circumstances human beings can create. \nAt Bible Study on Monday 11/25 at 6 PM\, we will be trying to answer the question\, “How did America get Christianity so wrong?” The answer may surprise you. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy
