Last week we finished up our series on the Clobber Texts\, and the students decided they wanted to continue meeting on Monday nights to keep exploring scripture. They came up with a ton of questions that we will tackle in upcoming weeks\, such as: \n– How did the American Church get Christianity so wrong? \n– What does the Bible say about disabilities and healing with prayer? How do we reconcile that with modern medicine? \n– What were Luther’s 99 Treatises all about\, and how has that shaped modern Christianity? \n– What is the basic timeline of Biblical HIstory? \n– Beauty and the wisdom literature in the Bible that talks about nature \n– Why is King David so revered when he behaved so badly? \n– Are there other entities and stories in the Bible that are not really what we have been told? \n– Creationism vs. Evolution \n– What are the canons and how did they get to be the way they are? Will there ever be a third cannon? \n– What are the ancient\, sacred covenants? What is a covenant\, anyway? \n– Are there parts of the Bible that are missing? Who chose what went into the BIble as it is\, and how did they choose? \n– Why do we have so many denominations\, and how did they all get created? \n– How do we reconcile “church law” with “state law?” \n– How do we reconcile “pure doctrine” with “realistic daily practice”? \nDo you have questions or passages that you would like to explore in an upcoming class? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Advent our theme is “Emmanuel – God with us.” All year long we have been practicing St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Prayer of Examen during our centering moment. This is the exercise where we reflect back over the past 24 hours and examine how God was with us the entire time. The story of Jesus’ birth contains a myriad of familiar figures\, and God is with them all in very different ways. This Sunday we will read about the birth of John the Baptist – Jesus’ forerunner\, baptizer\, and good friend. There was nothing typical about John’s pregnancy or birth\, especially because God was with John\, his mother\, and his father. Come join us as we learn how God has been with our ancestors and continues to be with us today\, even when nothing is going the way we expect. \nThis past Monday in Bible Study we tackled the question “How did America get Christianity so wrong?” and had nine people in person and online. We will be assembling 125 Sack Lunches – which will bring us to 500 total\, which was our goal for this year. Mark Kahanding is one of our beloved members and is currently deployed. We are putting together a Christmas box of wish-list items for him and his unit. They are asking for: Letters\, Instant Noodles\, Canned fruits and vegetables\, Pillow blankets\, Carpet\, Hygiene products\, and Tape. For the carpet\, Mark needs one small personal-sized carpet for his room. Any size will do. I am sure that they would also appreciate Christmas treats of your choosing. If you bring us the items by 12/15\, the church will package them up and get them in the mail. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe holidays are upon us! This is that special time of year where ministers around the world prepare to tell their flock that the season is about Jesus\, not commercialism\, ad nauseum. We also like to remind our parishioners that we are in the season of Advent\, not Christmas\, and then argue whether the liturgical colors in the weeks leading up to Christmas are purple or Sarum blue. Finally\, on Rose Sunday\, when we light the pink rose candle and the priests wear pink rose vestments\, we argue whether a man wearing full-length pink rose dress robe vestment is still manly. Never one to question tradition\, I am warming and gearing up for the rigor of the next six weeks. \nHere’s the thing about the true nature of missing the point every year: Advent is about waiting. It’s about anticipating. It’s about delayed gratification. It’s about the fact that there is nothing\, nothing you can do to make it get here faster\, and nothing that will stop it from coming even if we’re not ready. Thanksgiving is such a wonderful beginning to the holidays because it is about thankfulness and togetherness and a time when folks who were enemies put aside their differences to eat together – or at least that’s the story we’re told. But then we launch into Black Friday like a horse out of a starting gate and we forget that we’re actually waiting quietly and noticing. \nWe are allowing the details of the brokenness of the world to come into sharp focus around us and wait in anticipation for God’s perfectly-timed gift and solution. So I’m not going to tell you not to sing Christmas carols early or shop til you drop or even decorate in red\, white\, and green during Advent. What I am going to do is invite you to notice the things that make you sad\, or worried\, or frightened\, and wait for God’s perfect intervention. Because if you do this\, you’ll be in good company. The ancient peoples like Mary and Joseph and the folks in Jerusalem and Galilee and Rome all hustled and bustled\, too. They shopped til they dropped and dressed in garish\, out-of-season colors and sang songs in the wrong month and argued what men and women and even priests should or should not wear. They debated appropriate liturgical colors and rituals\, too. But they also were surrounded by circumstances that saddened them\, worried them\, and frightened them. And they trusted that God would intervene and provide a solution. They waited. They waited in anticipation of the fulfilment of the same words of Isaiah that we read every Christmas Advent: \nThen Isaiah said: ‘Hear then\, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals\, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look\, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son\, and shall name him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:13-14) \nNow is a time to consciously turn all of your weariness over to God as you go about all of your regular Christmas Advent Holiday activities. Don’t sweat whether you are doing the holidays right or wrong. Trust that sometimes\, everything is wrong\, and God will make it right. \nThis Sunday we will be studying a passage from Paul’s letter to the Romans\, about how God is in fact making everything right whether you notice it or not\, and all will in fact be all right regardless of any circumstances human beings can create. \nAt Bible Study on Monday 11/25 at 6 PM\, we will be trying to answer the question\, “How did America get Christianity so wrong?” The answer may surprise you. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe Bible is filled with images of God and Christ as shepherd. This Sunday we will be reading one that speaks of God as the Good Shepherd and as a refuge. But it is embedded in a psalm\, and the psalms were written under wildly tumultuous circumstances. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be drawing deep from our spiritual well as we try to adjust to our rapidly changing present and future. Elections are – by nature – divisive\, and I know that this year many people are feeling the divide and the outcome on a deep personal level. We will be looking to scripture\, history\, and our own personal journeys for hope\, wisdom\, and strength. The book of Ecclesiates tells us that there is nothing new under the sun\, and as I have been saying for weeks\, this is not the first time that the world\, the apostles\, the prophets\, or even this country has found itself in this situation. We have much wisdom and experience to draw from. \nThe church will be open for an hour for quiet prayer and meditation in the sanctuary beginning at 9 AM. We’ll have a pot of coffee on in the Fellowship Hall. \nOur church has been through a lot and we need to lean on each other and be there for each other more than ever. We will be blessing our November birthdays and anniversaries\, and we will be blessing all of our veterans and those who serve in our armed forces. If you or anyone you know has served\, please join us for a special blessing. Yes\, of course you can stand for someone who is not here in person! \nAfter worship we will be assembling sack lunches in the sanctuary and we need all hands on deck. Janette\, Tere and I went shopping on Monday and have purchased enough food to assemble at least 100 lunches. \nAnd please join us on Saturday\, November 9th for our Knitting (or should I at this point say Crafting?) Ministry! Studies have shown that crafting with your hands activates the part of your brain that relaxes you\, so it is impossible to stress and knit at the same time! We have all the materials for knitting\, crocheting\, and coloring and we invite everyone to join us regardless of skill level or crafting preference. Bring your own project! We have a potluck brunch so bring something to share and come enjoy a fun morning of fellowship\, good food\, and creativity. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nIt feels as though there is so much going on that All Saint’s Sunday is almost lost in the shuffle. The Dodgers won the world series\, Trick-or-Treaters will be roaming the streets this evening\, Election Day is right around the corner\, I submitted my finished novel to my publisher\, and in the midst of all of it\, my sweet dog Oliver had surgery yesterday. (Thank you everyone for your prayers – it was successful and he is home and recovering well.) \nBut All Saint’s Day and All Saint’s Sunday are a special day in the church year\, always falling the first day of November and the first Sunday after Halloween\, and it is important to take a moment to acknowledge it. This Sunday is a time to remember the saints in our lives who have passed. In Mexican Tradition\, they celebrate this as part of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivals. \nThis coming Sunday\, we will celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us with a special candle-lighting ceremony and all are invited to participate. This day of remembrance is crucial as we approach an election day that has all of us on edge. As I watched Jim\, Dax\, Tere and Giselle reverently hang the three Memorial Quilts in our sanctuary last Monday – newly cleaned and repaired by Marlene and Jose\, and updated with new memory squares – I felt a deep sense of sadness at the number of people this church lost to the AIDS epidemic\, and in the years since. But I also felt a sense of resounding resolve\, because this church has withstood so many things and changed so many lives – not in spite of the challenges in this world\, but because of them. When other churches hid their heads in the sand\, this church opened its doors. When other churches continued to peddle banal rhetoric\, West Hollywood UCC lived out the gospel. This is not accidental – this commitment to truth and justice runs in our veins. \nWe carry with us the wisdom and stories and experience and laughter and perspective and examples of those whom we have lost. We do not walk alone\, we do not walk in ignorance\, and we do not walk in apathy. Everything that we are experiencing\, someone in our family tree has already gone through it\, and here we still are. Part of the reason this election cycle seems so fraught is because we know our history\, we know how hard people have fought\, and we know what is at stake. That is because we carry with us the wisdom of our ancestors. \nIf you haven’t voted\, yet\, do it today! Our ancestors fought and died so that we would have the right to vote\, and it behooves us to honor their sacrifice. A vote is a prayer put down on paper\, so if you’re not registered\, go to the polls anyway – Same Day Registration is available and your vote will still be counted. If you need a ride\, call or text me at 323-793-9059. I’ll be at the church on Monday and Tuesday and would be happy to take people to the polls. \nThis Monday at 6 PM we will have our final Bible Study class in our series on the Clobber Texts and also decide what we want to study next.
