DESCRIPTION:Last week the air quality near/in the church was not at levels safe enough to gather in person\, so we were not able to assemble sack lunches. Food for our homeless neighbors is an acute need\, so if you are free\, please plan on helping assemble sack lunches after worship (12:30 PM) this Sunday\, January 16th. If you would like to contribute to the lunches\, we can always use non-perishable\, easy-to open (pop-top)\, nutritious food. Cans of chili\, protein-rich soups\, beef ravioli\, tuna fish\, fruits\, vegetables\, granola bars\, and bottles of water are all in constant demand and can be dropped off at the church generally during regular business hours. Please call or text me at 323-793-9059 first to make sure someone is there to let you in before you arrive to drop off donations. Our youth also go shopping for the lunches every month and you can contribute to the grocery fund here.

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWe are in a liminal state right now as West Hollywood UCC is slowly returning to normal\, but the wildfires in Los Angeles are still actively burning. The Sunset Fire that threatened the church last week has been extinguished and our Church Council has been monitoring the air quality levels for the past several days. The air quality has been consistently safe\, so the church has been aired out and our Council allowed the building be reopened\, so Giselle and I returned this past week. \nThis Sunday\, January 19\, 2025 we are planning on worshiping in person\, barring any additional disasters. Our Council is encouraging people to wear masks as they desire for their own comfort and safety. \nPlease CLICK HERE to join us on Facebook. \nWe will also have Bible Study on Monday evening at 6 PM and plan to return to our regularly-scheduled activities. \nBear in mind\, however\, that the Palisades\, Eaton\, and Hurst fires in Los Angeles are still actively burning. The Altadena fire has left devastation that will take years of rebuilding to overcome. \nIn the past week I have met twice with Rev. Rachael Pryor\, the Conference Minister of our Southern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ\, Rev. Katie Howe of our National UCC Disaster Ministries\, and with many of the other clergy in the Los Angeles area\, including Rev. Paul Tellström of Altadena United Church of Christ. \nWe have repeatedly learned that the number of people simply wanting to check in\, ask for updates\, and offering to help is overwhelming and making it difficult for those affected to deal with their own safety and mental health. One minister received over 400 text messages and Facebook messages in a single day that all required a response. When people didn’t get a timely response\, many texted back asking why the delay\, which brought the total to 600+ messages. For someone who is in an emergency shelter\, grieving\, suffering from smoke inhalation\, and has lost everything\, this creates a stressful\, impossible situation. Please be patient and know that your help and offers of support and concern will be needed and appreciated but many folks can’t help you coordinate that right now. \nI have let the minister of Altadena UCC know that we at WeHo UCC are here for them in whatever way we can be of support or service\, but that he doesn’t have to respond until and unless he thinks of something we can help with. He thanked us\, and now we will patiently and graciously wait until called. \nAlso\, most of the work and help will be needed weeks or months from now\, long after the crisis has faded from the news. West Hollywood UCC is committed to the long-term recovery efforts and I will let you know how we can help in the upcoming months. \nThe UCC Disaster Ministries has put out a national appeal for recovery funds\, and those will be managed by our SCNV conference\, who is working directly with affected churches\, evacuees\, and reputable organizations to get them what they need. Click here if you want to donate to that fund which will stay local and be administrated by local UCC churches in LA County who are on the ground helping with the recovery efforts. \nRight now what people need most is fairly-priced\, temporary (1-3 years) housing. We are already seeing landlords raise their rents in anticipation of evacuees having no other choice. Bear in mind that if someone has lost their home or place of business\, there may be no going back\, and they will be relocating permanently\, or perhaps for years if they are waiting to rebuild. If you know of a fairly-priced housing option for evacuees\, let me know so we can get it to people who need it. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis past week we packed our 500th Sack Lunch to be distributed to the homeless who come to our gates. At the beginning of the year\, we came up with this goal together\, launched in February 2024\, and with the help of many hands – and the grace of God – we achieved it together. I am particularly heartened by our youth who did so much work – Janette for her leadership and Kamila and Mavery for going on so many shopping trips and doing so much heavy lifting. Our youth planned the meals\, loaded the carts\, did all the math when shopping in enormous quantities\, and hefted the food into cars and into the church month after month. \nIn the Gospel of Matthew\, Jesus describes those who fulfill God’s purpose and vision\, “for I was hungry and you gave me food\, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink\, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…Truly I tell you\, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family\, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:35\, 40) \nOur Mission Statement is simple: “No Condemnation here! We are a Loving Community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice.” \nWe have built relationships with the people who come to our gates. Giselle and I know many of them by name\, because we took the time to ask. Many of the folks have shared their stories with us\, and because of our relationship with CIRCLE and the Hollywood Food Coalition we have been able to refer the people who wanted it to housing services. \nBut there are many more who we have helped to find jobs\, given a warm winter cap\, supplied feminine products\, outfitted with badly-needed clothes or shoes. But we also talk with them\, offer them a cup of coffee\, invite them to worship\, bless them as they leave\, and tell them we’re glad to see them. Some were homeless\, some were unemployed\, some were just very old and on a tight budget that didn’t quite stretch to the end of the month. But they all left with a nutritious and delicious meal knowing that they were welcome. \nAs Christ’s body\, with God’s help we strive to embody Christ’s spirit and justice. Not just in our words\, but in our daily actions. I feel so blessed and grateful to be part of such a spirit-filled\, active church. It feels good to support the church financially and to drop my checks into the plate every week because I know it is used to fulfill our mission in a real and tangible way every single day. I see the results in the faces of people we are helping every single day. \nAs we head into Christmas week\, I wish you all a blessed holiday filled with love and justice and God’s abiding grace. They came up with a ton of questions that we will tackle in upcoming weeks\, such as: \n– How did the American Church get Christianity so wrong? \n– What does the Bible say about disabilities and healing with prayer? How do we reconcile that with modern medicine? \n– What were Luther’s 99 Treatises all about\, and how has that shaped modern Christianity? \n– What is the basic timeline of Biblical HIstory? \n– Beauty and the wisdom literature in the Bible that talks about nature \n– Why is King David so revered when he behaved so badly? \n– Are there other entities and stories in the Bible that are not really what we have been told? \n– Creationism vs. Evolution \n– What are the canons and how did they get to be the way they are? Will there ever be a third cannon? \n– What are the ancient\, sacred covenants? What is a covenant\, anyway? \n– Are there parts of the Bible that are missing? Who chose what went into the BIble as it is\, and how did they choose? \n– Why do we have so many denominations\, and how did they all get created? \n– How do we reconcile “church law” with “state law?” \n– How do we reconcile “pure doctrine” with “realistic daily practice”? \nDo you have questions or passages that you would like to explore in an upcoming class? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis week Rev. Lisa Bove will be preaching on the two passages that inspired our theme this Advent: Emmanuel\, God with us. Isaiah the prophet used the name “Emmanuel” more than 500 years before Jesus was born. That same passage is cited in the book of Matthew over 600 years later when an angel appears to Joseph. Please join us we hear Rev. Lisa preach about how God is with us today and always. \nAs we approach the end of the year\, we are striving to meet our 2024 budget and plan for our 2025 budget. If you have a little extra you can donate\, we will graciously receive it. \nAs we prepare to enter 2025\, we remember that we are a loving community\, and our Mission statement is simple: \n No Condemnation here! We are a Loving Community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice.  \nWe have lived that out this past year by reaching our goal of 500 sack lunches distributed to the poor. We have striven to pay our employees fair and livable wages\, and we have held numerous fundraisers. \nWe continue to be a source of hope and assistance for those in crisis\, be they homeless desperately needing housing\, hungry needing a sack lunch\, injured needing medical assistance\, or grieving needing comfort and community. We have more and more new people who are organizing our various ministries with their gifts and passion. We have assembled and distributed more than 500 sack lunches\, exceeding our goal for 2024. We have gathered in fellowship and love in worship and after worship with numerous people donating delicious refreshments. We have gathered monthly to raise funds and share laughter in the Let My People Show. In Bible Study and in Sunday Worship\, we have dug into the most challenging of scriptures and found God’s loving and liberating spirit time and again. Our prayer group has met faithfully every Wednesday to pray for our community and our world. Our Care Team has lovingly sent hundreds of hand-written birthday and anniversary cards. We have knitted dozens of warm caps and scarves for the homeless in our knitting ministry. We have restored and updated our AIDS Memorial Quilt to remember our history as a justice-filled\, compassionate\, welcoming church when very few were. We have partnered with organizations like  Crisis and Incident Response through Community-led Engagement (CIRCLE)\, A 24/7 unarmed service for homeless people in L.A.\, Tree People of Beverly Hills\, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). \nEvery week we put our money where our mouth is and strive to make a difference for someone in the community. And we have done it together\, month after month\, with your generous donations of time\, talent\, and money. \nAs we approach the end of the year\, I ask that you prayerfully consider how you might continue to support us in our mission and goals as we strive to be a loving community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice with no condemnation. \nYou can always donate at wehoucc.org (click on GIVE) and set up recurring payments. I have set up recurring payments to come directly from my checking account every month because I know that the church isn’t charged transaction fees\, the church can rely on the donation even if I’m not there on a Sunday\, and the Treasurer and Council can use the predictability of the donations to make long-term budgeting plans. \nIn upcoming weeks we will be distributing pledge forms for those who want them\, as well. Watch for updates on our budget! \nIt makes me feel good every month to know that I am supporting such a wonderful church and all of its missions.
