SUMMARY:Join Us This Sunday\, November 2\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday will remember all the saints in our lives and history who have passed on before us. Everyone will be invited to light a candle in memory of the saints in their lives who have taught them\, shaped them\, and inspired them. We will be reading a story from the little-known book of Tobit about a man who insisted on honoring the saints who passed even when it got him into trouble. Please join us this Sunday as we recall our history and honor our foremothers and forefathers. \nSPECIAL NOTE ON FOOD RESOURCES: For food insecurity\, if you need help or want to help\, reach out to Pastor Tracy at 323-793-9059 (call or text). The church can help you with groceries\, and you will remain anonymous. \nAs our government shutdown continues and the threats to cut off SNAP benefits loom large\, our church is poised to help. On Sundays\, anyone can take a sack lunch at any time for themselves or to give to someone who can use it. You don’t have to ask permission or explain why you are taking a sack lunch to anyone. They are in the bins with yellow lids in the Fellowship Hall. Many people are already receiving and donating specifically for this issue as of this past week. You can also call or text to: \n\nDonate to the Sack Lunch Program\nDonate to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund\nVolunteer for Sack Lunch Distribution during the week\n\nIf we all work in beloved community\, ask for what we need\, and give what we can\, we can navigate this temporary crisis together. Here are also resources for different food banks\, hot meals\, and distribution sites around Los Angeles. CLICK HERE for Food Bank Resource Guide & Supporting Our Community Through Benefit Changes CLICK HERE for LA County Parks Food Program. \n“…they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all\, as any had need…day by day…they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts…” Acts 2:44-46 \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, October 26\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe book of Psalms is an interesting text in its use of reflective Hebrew poetry and incredibly diverse range of feelings expressed about and to God. At the same time\, it is one of the books most quoted by Jesus. The 37th Psalm is written by a person who sees the whole world falling apart\, and is deeply upset by how unfair it all seems. Trust in God seems difficult at best and foolhardy at worst. And yet\, when we look at our own lives and justice\, with our actual experiences\, we see that the Psalmist is not far off in their assertions about God’s sense of justice in God’s own time. This Psalm gave hope at that time\, a thousand years later when Jesus quoted it during His Sermon on the Mount\, and the subversive hope\, peace\, and faith that it fosters still ring true thousands of years later. Please join us this Sunday as we take a deep dive into faith and justice in scripture. \nPlease stay after worship for our Fall Congregational Meeting when we will elect Council members for next year\, hear a brief update from our Treasurer on the church finances\, and I will give a short report on the church goals for 2025 and 2026. \nWe will also be collecting for two charities this month and next\, and you can click here to see two brief videos that talk about the funds: Strengthen the Church (STC) and One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS). These two collections are usually taken in the spring\, but this spring was exceptionally strange and chaotic for me\, so we postponed them. We will be talking about these in upcoming services\, but if you would like to make a donation to either\, you can click here or Venmo to @wehoucc (phone# 323-793-9059) and type OGHS or STC in the memo. Because we know we are taking these later in the year and close together\, our church leadership has agreed to contribute $300 to each from our Mission Endowment Fund to supplement whatever is contributed. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness and generosity! \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n  \nSAVE THE DATE \nSaturday\, October 25\, 2025 – Labyrinth Walk. If you would like to carpool\, please call or text 323-793-9059 and plan on meeting us in the church parking lot by 10 AM on 10/25. Bring a brown bag lunch or something to share for a picnic after the labyrinth. \nSunday\, October 25\, 2025  – Fall Congregational Meeting immediately following worship. \nWednesday\, October 28\, 2025 – Prayer Group meets via Zoom \nSunday\, November 2\, 2025 – Collecting for One Great Hour of Sharing. You can donate to OGHS here. Also\, we will observe All Saint’s Day. Please join us for a special worship service where we remember and honor the saints in our lives who have gone before us. \nSaturday\, November 8\, 2025 9 AM – 12 Noon – Knitting Ministry and Potluck Brunch \nSunday\, November 9\, 2025 – Birthday and Anniversary Blessings for November\, and Blessing of the Veterans. \nSunday\, November 16\, 2025 – Collecting for Strengthen the Church. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, October 12\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWhen Jesus overturned the tables at the temple\, driving out the dove-sellers and the money changers\, his actions appear angry\, targeted\, even violent. On the surface\, his actions make little sense in light of his message of peace and community. But there is more to this story than Jesus simply losing his temper. There are historical\, geographical\, and political powers at play long before Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. What we are seeing is Jesus attempting to neutralize oppression and re-balance the powers \nof church and state. Jesus’ anger and his action have a lot to teach us about responding to long-standing systems of injustice – both the cost and the reward\, and God’s role in history. Please join us as we dig deep into this story to find the message of God’s hope\, peace\, and beloved community. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, September 28\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nMoses is known as the greatest prophet in the Hebrew scriptures. He stood up to Pharoah and led the people out of slavery into freedom. But Moses didn’t start off being a great leader. When God called him to save the people\, Moses declined\, and gave no fewer than six excuses in a row as to why he really couldn’t\, shouldn’t\, wouldn’t go. We may laugh\, but Moses’ complaints are actually quite reasonable by human standards\, and ones that we still use today. How did God reassure Moses and convince him to go? How did Moses evolve from being a “Let someone else deal with it” kind of prophet to a “Let my people go!” kind of prophet? \nPlease join us this Sunday as we explore the answers to these questions. This conversation has much to teach us about answering God’s call and being the hands and feet of Jesus on the earth today amidst a similar call to help. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, September 21\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends of Christ\, \nThe book of Exodus is about people that defy expectations. Over and over they are forced to choose between the status quo\, the old ways\, or boldly stepping into new territory that feels treacherous and uncertain. But long before Moses parts the waters\, long before the people are taken to task for building the golden calf\, long before manna falls from heaven or frogs fall from the sky\, it starts with two women who defy authority. They quietly subvert expectations for blind obedience and they resist and sabotage tyrannical authority. Without them\, we wouldn’t have Moses. Without them\, there never would have been a “Let my people go\,” because there would no longer have been a people to let go. Their tiny acts of defiance risked their own lives\, but changed the fate of a nation. \nJoin us this Sunday as we learn about two unlikely and undercelebrated outlaws and how much they have to tech us about resistance against fascism. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:EMERGING STRATEGIES TO FIGHT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF AI DATA CENTERS
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n \nEmerging threats demand emerging strategies. The rise of AI data centers has been a driver in the rise in power demand and increasing greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Moreover\, the advanced cooling systems required by these data centers necessitate high levels of water consumption which can have serious ecological consequences\, especially in places of water scarcity. Finally\, the technological components of AI data centers require the extracting of rare earth minerals in addition to generating enormous amounts of electronic waste. The justice concerns intertwined with these issues are many when one considers the racial and economic disparities in bearing the cost of everything from increased utility bills to the harms of climate change. To address what is at stake and point us toward emerging strategies\, we will hear from following featured guests: -Anthony Rogers-Wright\, The Black Hive of Movement for Black Lives -Nayyirah Shariff\, Flint Rising -Wanda Mosley\, Black Voters Matter -Lindsay Harper\, Arm in Arm Even if you cannot make the live event\, still register\, and we will send you a recording. This monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, August 31\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nMary Magdalene is a figure of great mystery and controversy. She is both judged and revered. As the first evangelist called by Christ\, she holds a critical place in history. There is much that we don’t know about her and much that has been made up about her. As Jesus’ designated apostle\, the first witness to the resurrection\, she wears a special mantle that has much to teach us about faith\, calling\, and redemption. When we delve into the history of her name and discipleship\, we find that Jesus holds her up as a special testament to faith in difficult times and places\, and her example has much to teach us. \nThis Sunday we will be assembling our 1000th Sack Lunch (and many more) after worship\, and celebrating with a BBQ and Potluck. Please join us! \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, August 24\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe story of Jesus casting demons into swine is a strange story that raises many questions. Why was there a herd of pigs in Israel? Can people really be possessed by thousands of demons? Did this unbelievable event really happen? This Sunday we will be digging into this scripture and its historical implications. When we unpack this episode from the book of Matthew\, we find it holds many lessons for us in today’s world. \nI’d like to give a special thanks to Rodney for preaching while I was away last Sunday\, and to everyone who kept the church running smoothly in my absence. \nYou may notice we have a new motorized gate in our parking lot. More than a year ago our gate was vandalized and the lock was destroyed. We have now upgraded the gate\, the lock and the whole system. This will increase safety and ease of use. This was a huge project that took many months to organize. A special thanks to Rodney Chadderton\, Giselle Toporkova\, and the entire Church Council (Rev. Lisa\, Rev. Janie\, Jenni\, Tom\, Gary\, and Rodney) for all their efforts to bring this project to completion. If you see these good folk\, take a moment to tell them thank you.
