If the Sower in this story represents God\, and God only nets 25% positive results\, then what chance does that leave the rest of us\, especially in a time when ‘gospel’ is a loaded term\, ‘church trauma’ is a real thing\, and ‘evangelism’ is equated with White Christian Nationalism? The good news is that Jesus doesn’t just leave us with a nebulous parable\, He defines and clarifies it for his disciples\, and in that clarification there is surprising wisdom and even hope. \nAfter worship we will be assembling Sack Lunches and also starting our new Bible Study series on Living into the Kin-dom\, focusing on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. But first-century weddings came in a slightly different flavor. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nJonah is a familiar story of a man who is swallowed by a whale\, and lives to tell the tale. But his story is one of contradiction and fear\, hiding and trying to avoid God’s call for his agency in a time of great need\, violence\, and injustice. Jonah is an interesting figure because he is such an exasperating human. He complains\, he avoids responsibility\, he makes excuses\, he pouts\, and he makes sure to say\, “See?! I told you so!” straight to God’s face. Despite all this\, he manages to make an enormous difference in the world and in the stronghold of the oppressor of his day. Jonah – in all his stubbornness and immaturity – has much to teach us about overcoming our own bad attitudes\, embracing God’s invitation\, and speaking truth to justice. \nDuring worship we will be blessing all of our June birthdays and anniversaries. \nThis Sunday we will have Bible Study immediately following worship in the Fellowship Hall. We will be studying 1 Cor 6:9-10\, and the concept of who gets into the Kin-dom of Heaven\, and who does not. Mistranslations often include the word “homosexuals\,” but that has not always been the case. The second chapter of\nActs describes a phenomenally full day with multiple transformations in individuals and\nwithin an entire community. While we often focus on the miracle of the languages\,\nflames appearing\, and enormous wind\, Peter’s sermon warrants a close look. In it\,\nPeter combines history\, prophecy and the concept of God’s promises fulfilled right\nbefore our eyes. God’s miracle confuses people\, but Peter’s speech galvanizes them.\nThe words he uses still hold true today\, and for all the same reasons. Please join us this\nSunday as we dive into the miracle of Pentecost and celebrate the formation of the first\nChristian community. \nIt is traditional to wear red on Pentecost\, and so we invite everyone to join us in\ntheir red for worship! \nBible Study will be held immediately following worship in the Fellowship Hall. This week\nwe will study Romans 1:26-27\, a passage often cited as anti-lesbian. Their work invites those aligned with the mainstream to reframe fear as something to interrogate\, not inherit. \nTheir ministry spans a wide range of contexts\, from rural multi-charge churches to a thriving progressive congregation\, from a large suburban church to a new church start/nonprofit hybrid. In every setting\, Phiwa brings warmth\, insight\, and a passion for equipping leaders to thrive in their unique calls. \nBefore ministry\, Phiwa was (and still is!) a tech nerd. Today\, that love of technology fuels their curiosity about algorithmic integrity\, digital equity\, and leveraging tools in service to the mission: faithful\, just\, and communal. Their approach is grounded in practical theology\, innovation\, and a deep reverence for the sacredness of human connection. \nPhiwa is the solo parent of an adult daughter who challenges them in brilliance and beauty. In their free time\, Phiwa enjoys reading\, upcycling\, 90s R&B\, dad jokes\, and creating all manner of things. Like vibranium in fictional Wakanda\, creativity is inextricably woven into Phiwa’s existence\, strength\, and wisdom.
