On the surface\, his actions make little sense in light of his message of peace and community. But there is more to this story than Jesus simply losing his temper. There are historical\, geographical\, and political powers at play long before Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. What we are seeing is Jesus attempting to neutralize oppression and re-balance the powers \nof church and state. Jesus’ anger and his action have a lot to teach us about responding to long-standing systems of injustice – both the cost and the reward\, and God’s role in history. DESCRIPTION:We would love for you to join us for our next quarterly labyrinth walk on October 25th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Holy Spirit Retreat Center (HSRC) in Encino.  This will be our All Souls Walk which we are holding early so that people can enjoy their Halloween weekend.  Please bring an optional photo or small memento of loved ones who have passed.\n\nIf this is your first time at HSRC\, please take hard right upon entering the grounds.  Follow the road until you see parking.  Parking is available in the area near the luggage drop-off sign which is also the entrance to the retreat center.  If this lot is full\, continue following the road to the upper dirt lot and you can park there and walk back to the entrance.   We are NOT allowed to park in the lot right when you enter the property.  There will be a sign on your right directing you to the labyrinth walk.

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe book of Psalms is an interesting text in its use of reflective Hebrew poetry and incredibly diverse range of feelings expressed about and to God. At the same time\, it is one of the books most quoted by Jesus. The 37th Psalm is written by a person who sees the whole world falling apart\, and is deeply upset by how unfair it all seems. Trust in God seems difficult at best and foolhardy at worst. And yet\, when we look at our own lives and justice\, with our actual experiences\, we see that the Psalmist is not far off in their assertions about God’s sense of justice in God’s own time. This Psalm gave hope at that time\, a thousand years later when Jesus quoted it during His Sermon on the Mount\, and the subversive hope\, peace\, and faith that it fosters still ring true thousands of years later. DESCRIPTION:With the Federal Government shutdown entering its fourth week\, there is a significant and devastating threat to the food security for the most vulnerable\, our youth\, seniors and families.  LA County Parks is (and has been) a critical part of the food safety net services in 48 Parks\, 16 Teen Centers and 9 Senior centers and programs. \nTo support this dire situation with the loss of SNAP and CalFresh and critical food access impacting Los Angeles County residents\, LA County Parks is leaning in to expand capacity to its Food Programs at Parks! \nLA County Parks provides the following food safety net services programs for youth\, teens and seniors. These food programs are \n\nFree Healthy Snack Program for youth at 48 parks (Monday thru Friday @ 3pm-4pm) – ages 17 and under.\nFree Hot Supper (Dinner) Program at Our SPOT Teen Centers for teens at 16 parks (Monday thru Friday @ 7pm) – ages 12 to 18 years old.\nFree Senior Food Program for older adults at 9 parks (Monday thru Friday) – age 55+

We will be reading a story from the little-known book of Tobit about a man who insisted on honoring the saints who passed even when it got him into trouble. The church can help you with groceries\, and you will remain anonymous. \nAs our government shutdown continues and the threats to cut off SNAP benefits loom large\, our church is poised to help. DESCRIPTION:The stories of David the boy shepherd verses David the king have long fascinated me with their depictions of completely different personalities for the same person. As we bless our veterans for Veteran’s Day\, this story of David as unwitting soldier and later commander of armies has much to teach us. We also have much to learn about our faith’s history and relationship to soldiers and war. Much of what we claim to believe was birthed by veterans in the aftermath of wars. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWe often hear the core tenets of our faith reduced to “Love your neighbor” Or “Do unto\nothers.” This is easy to remember\, and quite compatible with other religions of the world\,\nwho have their own similar scriptures regarding love for the other. It’s not a bad credo to\nlive by\, especially when combined with “Faith\, without works\, is dead.” (James 2:17) The\nproblem with these two statements is not that they are bad theology\, it’s that they are\nmissing the other half of the instruction. I have long believed that most people actually\ndo already love their neighbors as themselves\, and they act out their faith through their\nworks. The problem is that they do not love themselves\, not the way that God intended\,\nand that is mirrored in how they feel toward their neighbor and how they treat their\nneighbor. This Sunday we will be studying the rest of the passage: the other half of the\ngreatest commandment. If we are to truly live out our faith and Jesus’ teachings and\nexample the way He intended\, we must actually hear Jesus’ entire instruction\, and\nwhere He got it from. \nLast week we talked about how the way we live informs what we believe\, but the\nreverse is just as true: what we believe informs how we live. Please join us this Sunday\nas we take a deep dive into one of the core beliefs and faith practices of our faith\nthroughout the ages. Why is it so important? How do we live it out today? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we celebrate Hope Sunday\, the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is not the beginning of Christmas\, it is the beginning of waiting. Of hoping. Of anticipating. Of quiet excitement. This Advent our theme is Surprising New Birth. Despite what we may see in the news\, I see newness and hope and plans for bright future popping up all over the place. This Advent we will be reading through the scriptures about the birth of Jesus\, but especially the surprise of newness. So many of the passages describe the surprise of a new birth\, either impending or just delivered. This news is always a surprise\, and yet the way that the angels or prophets deliver the news and to whom is incredibly meaningful. \nIn our modern context\, whether we are single moms\, newly engaged\, old men well past child-bearing age\, the lowest class of peasant\, an immigrant living in fear\, or a powerful political player (on either side of the aisle)\, the stories of Jesus’ birth have much to teach us about God’s surprising gift of hope\, peace\, joy\, and love throughout history and during this season\, especially. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy
