We also have much to learn about our faith’s history and relationship to soldiers and war. Much of what we claim to believe was birthed by veterans in the aftermath of wars. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWe often hear the core tenets of our faith reduced to “Love your neighbor” Or “Do unto\nothers.” This is easy to remember\, and quite compatible with other religions of the world\,\nwho have their own similar scriptures regarding love for the other. It’s not a bad credo to\nlive by\, especially when combined with “Faith\, without works\, is dead.” (James 2:17) The\nproblem with these two statements is not that they are bad theology\, it’s that they are\nmissing the other half of the instruction. I have long believed that most people actually\ndo already love their neighbors as themselves\, and they act out their faith through their\nworks. The problem is that they do not love themselves\, not the way that God intended\,\nand that is mirrored in how they feel toward their neighbor and how they treat their\nneighbor. This Sunday we will be studying the rest of the passage: the other half of the\ngreatest commandment. If we are to truly live out our faith and Jesus’ teachings and\nexample the way He intended\, we must actually hear Jesus’ entire instruction\, and\nwhere He got it from. \nLast week we talked about how the way we live informs what we believe\, but the\nreverse is just as true: what we believe informs how we live. Please join us this Sunday\nas we take a deep dive into one of the core beliefs and faith practices of our faith\nthroughout the ages. Why is it so important? How do we live it out today? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we celebrate Hope Sunday\, the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is not the beginning of Christmas\, it is the beginning of waiting. Of hoping. Of anticipating. Of quiet excitement. This Advent our theme is Surprising New Birth. Despite what we may see in the news\, I see newness and hope and plans for bright future popping up all over the place. This Advent we will be reading through the scriptures about the birth of Jesus\, but especially the surprise of newness. So many of the passages describe the surprise of a new birth\, either impending or just delivered. This news is always a surprise\, and yet the way that the angels or prophets deliver the news and to whom is incredibly meaningful. \nIn our modern context\, whether we are single moms\, newly engaged\, old men well past child-bearing age\, the lowest class of peasant\, an immigrant living in fear\, or a powerful political player (on either side of the aisle)\, the stories of Jesus’ birth have much to teach us about God’s surprising gift of hope\, peace\, joy\, and love throughout history and during this season\, especially. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

And yet\, Jesus taught that is through loving our enemies that we find peace. How can this be? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe story of Jesus’ birth is a strange one\, especially since it occurs in a whirlwind of\npolitical activity. The Gospel of Luke details a birth that starts with a nation-wide census\nand ends with an angel appearing in the sky in a remote area in the middle of the night.\nAnd yet\, as disconnected as these seem\, all of Luke’s details are significant. As we\ncelebrate the third Sunday of Advent\, we will dig into the good news of Jesus’ birth and\nhow it was received by so many different groups in ancient Israel. Please join us as we\ndiscover the good news that we still receive\, and how this unlikely birth still brings us\njoy. \nPlease plan on returning to the sanctuary Sunday afternoon at 2 PM for a holiday\nconcert from the studio and students of Mark Abulencia. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there!

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThe gospel of John describes Jesus’ inception in a very different way than Matthew\,\nMark\, or Luke. Instead of mangers and angels and shepherds and pregnancies\, John\ndescribes love and light and Word. The Word of God incarnate is a phrase that is\nthrown around a lot\, but what does it really mean? What do Christians actually believe?\nDoes it even matter anymore? The answer to all of these questions runs deeper and\nspeaks to today’s society much more than most people realize. John’s gospel and\ndescription of Jesus coming into the world answers much of the religious and political\npropaganda we are seeing these days\, and it answers them with love\, light\, and clarity. \nPlease join us this Sunday as we dive deep into the word to discover the Word. \nOn 12/21 and 12/24 we will be taking a collection for the United Church of Christ\nChristmas Fund. CLICK HERE The Christmas Fund has been caring for active and retired clergy\nand lay employees of the United Church of Christ for over 100 years\, providing\nemergency grants\, supplementation of small annuities and health premiums\, and\nChristmas “Thank You” gift checks each December to our lower-income retirees. \nWe will also gather on Wednesday\, December 24 at 5 PM for a candlelight service of\nLessons and Carols. \nI will be out of the office beginning December 25\, but will return to lead worship on\nJanuary 4.
