The Word of God incarnate is a phrase that is\nthrown around a lot\, but what does it really mean? What do Christians actually believe?\nDoes it even matter anymore? The answer to all of these questions runs deeper and\nspeaks to today’s society much more than most people realize. John’s gospel and\ndescription of Jesus coming into the world answers much of the religious and political\npropaganda we are seeing these days\, and it answers them with love\, light\, and clarity. \nPlease join us this Sunday as we dive deep into the word to discover the Word. \nOn 12/21 and 12/24 we will be taking a collection for the United Church of Christ\nChristmas Fund. Only a few weeks ago\, we were reading about John kicking in Elizabeth’s womb\, and now this dynamic duo are suddenly the center of a spectacle involving thousands of people in the heart of the nation’s capital. All of a sudden\, John the Baptist is taking on the tax collectors\, the Pharisees\, the Sagisees\, the Roman military\, and random people living in the city. Why did Jesus start this ritual of baptism\, and what does it mean? Why did he choose such a public forum? DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nOn the heels of Jesus’ baptism\, he and John the Baptist leap into action. John keeps pointing out Jesus and telling the story of their calls. With John’s help\, Jesus immediately begins gathering disciples. Amidst all of this activity\, everyone begins acquiring new names: the Voice\, the Word\, the Lamb of God\, the Baptist\, the Rock\, the Messiah. And we see familiar images such as the dove\, the rock\, the river\, the lamb\, and the fire. None of this is accidental\, and none of this is insignificant. These images \ncarry powerful meanings and traditions\, as do the names that are revealed and bestowed. As we began to learn last Sunday when we read about Jesus’ baptism\, this river and this moment is a liminal space where people are transformed and God is revealed. Please join us this Sunday as we unpack these ancient symbols and learn how God is continue to reveal our discipleship and our names today. \nA special thanks to Jim and all of the folks who helped us to sort and stow our Christmas decorations last week so that we can start the New Year with a fresh\, clear sanctuary and fellowship hall. DESCRIPTION:Our local Dare to Struggle group who meets at our church is hosting a meeting tomorrow night\, Wednesday\, at 7 PM at our church. Please see their message and information below. I plan on attending to learn more about what we can do to protect our community and resist unjust actions by ICE and will look forward to seeing you there.  \nMany blessings\, Pastor Tracy \n“Thousands have taken to the street demanding justice for Renee Good\, Keith Porter and Alex Pretti. Federal agents responding to protests by killing\, maiming and arresting those brave enough to defy them\, while local Democrat politicians do nothing to stop them. Families with young children languish in concentration camps\, demanding: “Libertad!” \nWe’ve been moved by the spirit of righteous rebels like Kayden Rummler\, who lost his eye after getting shot point blank by a federal agent in Santa Ana on January 8th and who has continued to fight untiringly. The spirit of people who place what’s right over their own self-interest\, who make sacrifices to fight for justice. \nThis Wednesday\, at 7 pm at the West Hollywood United Church\, we’ll have a meeting to launch the Spring Surge to Melt ICE\, a national campaign to take this resistance into the schools\, the immigrant neighborhoods\, and church communities. It is critical to understand Jesus’ insistence that he did not want political power. This consistent assertion still rings true today when we look at our current political and religious climate. As we are striving to build a compassionate and just response to the egregious attacks on human rights in our cities and government right now\, Jesus’ words and example give a powerful example for how and why to balance power that has become corrupted. \nMembership Class: This Saturday\, February 7 we are hosting a Membership Class from 10 AM to 2 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Please let Pastor Tracy know that you’re coming before Saturday so that we can arrange for lunch for everyone. At this meeting our Treasurer will present the budget\, Pastor Tracy will give a State of the Church Address\, and we will confirm our new Council Member for 2026. We will also be discussing our goals for 2026 and beyond\, as a key culmination of our discussions over these next few weeks. On 2/1\, our Council Secretary Jenni Nichols asked the congregation to identify 1-5 words about what church means to them\, and write those words on a paper in the Fellowship Hall. We will be continuing this brainstorming and visioning exercise over the next few weeks preceding the Congregational Meeting. \nForum Against Repression on 2/28/2026.
