DESCRIPTION:The Rainbow Book Bus is a traveling LGBTQ+ book fair that aims to protect and promote queer literature. With the help of nearly 4\,000 donors\, co-founders Eric Cervini and Adam Powell purchased\, designed\, and transformed a 22-foot school bus into a solar-powered queer bookmobile. Partnering with the way OUT Foundation\, the Rainbow Book Bus plans to travel from California to Florida\, donating 10\,000 queer books to LGBTQ+ centers in underserved areas that are bearing the brunt of a record-breaking influx of book bans and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The Rainbow Book Bus made its debut at the Los Angeles Pride Parade this summer and since then has been running local book fairs throughout the LA area to continue raising funds for the upcoming tour. \nCome enjoy a pop-up queer book fair this Sunday October 22nd after weekly worship! DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 15th\, The Reverend Anne Gardner will serve as our guest preacher\, offering a reflection on her experience of walking the famed Camino de Santiago\, a 500-mile path that extends across the width of northern Spain. \nShe has written a book about this extraordinary journey\, recently published by Adelaide Books (NY/Lisbon)\, titled And So I Walked. The book recounts both the challenges of completing a long-distance hike as well as the emotional and spiritual undercurrents her time on the trail revealed. \nGardner currently runs the chaplaincy program at Harvard-Westlake\, a local private independent high school. Prior to accepting this position\, she spent twelve years as the Director of Spiritual and Religious Life at Phillips Academy\, Andover. \nFor many years Gardner has worked as a freelance writer\, crafting pieces for various outlets including NPR\, The Boston Globe\, The Providence Journal\, and the National Catholic Reporter\, among others. Dan Smith passed away Monday\, June 13 at the age of 70 after a brief illness. \nHe was in the home of his dreams in the Palm Springs area. \nHe was beloved by this entire congregation as well as many of the communities here in the Hollywood and West Hollywood area. \nA service in celebration will be held Saturday\, July 22\, 2023 at 1:00 PM at West Hollywood United Church of Christ in West Hollywood\, California. \nIn lieu of flowers\, donations can be made to the West Hollywood United Church of Christ Endowment Fund. \nWe will send out more information to this email list as it becomes available. \nMany blessings\, \nRev. Come and rock the night away with music and laughter with such performers as trans-rights activist and musician Ryan Cassata\, comedian Dax Jordan\, musician Greg in Good Company\, comedian Nina Nguyen and comedian D’Emmanuel. \nTickets are on a sliding scale from $20-$50. \nNet proceeds will benefit the ACLU\, Queer Youth Alliance\, West Hollywood UCC\, and the local artists. \nRyan Cassata\n \nRyan Cassata (he/him)\, signed to Kill Rock Stars\, is an award-winning singer-songwriter\, actor\, performer\, published writer\, LGBTQ+ activist\, and transgender motivational speaker. His work has been featured on/in GRAMMY.com\, Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, The New York Times\, Buzzfeed\, AltPress\, American Songwriter\, and The NY Daily News. \nDax Jordan\n \nThe only child of a Valley Girl and a Midwestern jazz drummer\, Dax has cornered that unique Beatnik/Mallrat/Trekkie demographic.  Raised on the fruits of the 80’s standup explosion\, his early exposure to everything from Stan Freberg to Paula Poundstone have ingrained in him a wide variety of styles and perspectives.  An ability to tailor the act to crowds from Catholic High School grad parties to lumberjack bars in rural Idaho to hipsters in downtown Seattle has allowed him to take advantage of every opportunity to come his way\, including writing jokes for Senator Ron Wyden (D-Or).  He has also appeared in several films and television programs seen internationally. \n“Not just great…Brilliant.”\n-Eddie Brill\, ‘Letterman’s Late Show’ Booker \nGreg Gilman\n \nBased in Los Angeles\, the 5-piece indie band fronted by singer-songwriter Greg Gilman is leading an explosion of timely Americana out of Southern California. \n“The songs are written for you to think\, reflect and question. And that\, is a very good thing\,” OnStage Magazine wrote after listening to GIGC’s debut LP\, American Way\, a 2018 record Impose Magazine described as\, “a stirring\, heartfelt experience.” \nCinematic melodies paired with heartfelt lyrics and irresistible harmonies have become hallmarks of the band’s unique sound — a mix of alternative rock\, folk\, country\, pop and soul — topped off by Greg’s dynamic and raspy vocals\, drawing comparisons to Bruce Springsteen\, The Lumineers\, and Mumford & Sons. “Some people give you a piece of themselves when they sing and Gilman is that kind of vocalist\,” IndieMinded wrote in 2018 while praising fan-favorite track\, Carrie’s Song\, which the music magazine described as “a soulful\, blues revival track with a gospel tinge that absorbs you.” \nD’Emmanuel\n\nD’Emmanuel is a comedian\, actor\, and writer who started in the Pacific Northwest before moving to Los Angeles. Aside from seeing him perform in venues like The Improv and The Icehouse\, you may also have seen him on shows like NBC’s Grimm and playing Wiggins on ABC’s Station 19. \nNina Nguyen\n \nNina Nguyen is a Vietnamese trans comic from Houston TX. She was a Standup NBC finalist\, toured colleges nationally through NACA\, was a writer for CBS Diversity Showcase and most recently performed on Limestone Comedy Festival.
