SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, August 3\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we are studying a passage from Matthew\, in which John the Baptist asks Jesus whether He is the one they’ve been waiting for. This is a loaded question\, and speaks to the great disillusionment of John and the people of Israel at the time. How do we wait and hope when it seems everything is going wrong? What are the promises God has made to her people\, and how do they still apply today? Jesus’ answer gets right to the heart of the issue\, and gives us a powerful perspective for today. \nLast Sunday I shared that our national gathering of UCC churches at the General Synod in July 2025 they passed a resolution denouncing ICE for engaging in Domestic Terrorism. There were may resolutions passed and you can find them all here: Resolutions – United Church of Christ General Synod 35. Newsweek reported this in an article on July 17. \nThere are also recordings of all the keynote speakers\, plenaries\, and sermons if you want to watch them here: General Synod 35 Livestream \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \nSave the Date \nWednesday\, August 6 – Prayer Group on Zoom at 7:00 PM \nSaturday\, August 9 – Knitting Ministry and Potluck Brunch 9 AM – 12 Noon in the Fellowship Hall \nSunday\, August 10 – Blessings for all August Birthdays and Anniversaries! \nSaturday\, August 16 – Labyrinth Walk at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center\, 501 S. Buena Vista St.\, Burbank\, CA. The walk begins at 11 AM and goes until 1 PM. Parking on-site will be $5 that day. We will be picnicking on-site that day after the walk\, and please bring a brown-bag lunch and/or something to share. Carpooling is encouraged – contact Tere if you want a ride or can give a ride: 213-479-5566. \nAugust 11 – 17  – Pastor Tracy out of the office. \nSunday\, August 17 – Guest Preacher Rodney Chadderton will deliver a sermon “Paid in Full” on Colossians 2. \nSunday\, August 31 – Sack Lunch and BBQ Picnic with WestPoint Church Youth Group

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, July 27\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis week we are studying Delilah (and Samson) yes\, in that order. Samson is often known as a hero due to his super-human strength. But Samson was not a good person\, and Delilah often gets blamed for his demise. But when we look at what Delilah actually said and did\, we see a much different picture of strong biblical womanhood emerge. What do we do when we see political strongmen abusing their power with women caught in the middle? Delilah’s example may surprise you\, and it may have much to teach us today. \nYou all may notice this Sunday that our gates are being repaired. The gate to the parking lot was damaged some time back\, and our gate to the courtyard is cumbersome to use and relatively insecure due to the stakes that are driven into the ground. Special thanks to Rodney and Giselle and the entire church council for finding a solution\, getting bids\, and coming in early\, staying late\, and getting the gates repaired and upgraded so that they are now motor-powered\, much more secure\, and easier to operate. The entire project should (hopefully!) be completed next week. Watch for more information in upcoming weeks! \nThis Sunday after worship we will be packing sack lunches. Please join us if you are able to help us reach our goal of 1000 sack lunches this year! \nPrayer Group meets every Wednesday night on Zoom at 7 PM \nDid you miss worship last Sunday but want to catch up? You can find recent sermons on our YouTube channel here. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, July 20\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be reading the story of Jesus healing the Centurion’s servant. This story is a brief encounter in Jesus’ ministry\, but rich with political\, social\, and moral meaning. We have heard the commandment\, “love your enemy\,” but what does it look like to put that into action? This short dialogue between Jesus and the Centurion gets to the heart of that question and still speaks volumes for today’s society. \nSince we transitioned from Facebook to Zoom for our online worship\, we have been behind on getting our recordings up for people to view after Sunday. We are now up and running with our sermons on YouTube. If you missed any of our Pride Series\, you can find them here: \nMay 25\, 2025 – Scriptural Authority \nJune 1\, 2025 – The First Gay Disciple \nJune 8\, 2025 – Salvation and Unity (Pentecost) \nJune 15\, 2025 – The Real Reason Sodom and Gomorrah were Destroyed \nJune 22\, 2025 – Paul Defends Lesbians \nJune 29\, 2025 – Who is my Neighbor? Xenophobia and how to combat it \nJuly 6\, 2025 – Let Freedom Ring (Guest Preacher Rev. Howard Fauntroy) \nJuly 13\, 2025 – Being Gay and Getting into Heaven \nDue to the current political climate and out of an abundance of respect for folks’ privacy\, I made the decision to only upload the scripture and sermons where the camera is focused on the pulpit. Portions of the worship service that show folks in the pews\, or have people’s names displayed on the Zoom screen will not be available on YouTube at the current time. \nSAVE THE DATE \nPrayer Group – Wednesday\, July 23 at 7 PM on Zoom.  \nAssembling Sack Lunches – Sunday\, July 27 immediately following worship. Many hands are needed\, so please join if you are available. \nBlessings for August Birthdays and Anniversaries – Sunday\, August 10 during worship. \nMembership Class – Saturday\, August 23 from 10 AM – 1 PM in the Fellowship Hall. If you are interested in joining West Hollywood United Church of Christ\, come to the class to learn more. Our by-laws state that anyone who has been attending and donating for a year\, and attended a membership class\, can be approved by Council to join. If you would like more information\, please contact Pastor Tracy. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, July 13\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nFirst off\, I’d like to give a special thanks to Rev. Howard Fauntroy for serving as our \nguest preacher last Sunday while I was out of the office. It’s always a joy to hear one of \nRev. Howard’s messages. This Sunday we are continuing our series of Pride Sermons \nby tackling the concept of gay folk and heaven. There are some who will claim the Bible \nsays that homosexuals can’t get into heaven. There are two passages that are usually \ncited for this argument\, and yet – as usual – this scripture is a victim of poor translation \nthat has simply gotten worse over the years. This Sunday we will dig into two letters \nfrom Paul that address folks that harm society and map out what heaven is. You may be \nsurprised to find that these passages so often used to harm the LGBTQ+ community \nactually contain messages of hope and justice that still ring especially relevant today. \nThis Sunday we will be blessing all folk with birthdays\, anniversaries\, and other special \noccasions during the month of July. Please come and let us celebrate with you. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis week we are talking about a Christian and Biblical response to xenophobia. The book of Esther provides us with a fascinating study of how a government can turn on a minority\, and what people can do to resist and survive it. \nIf you missed our Pride Sermon Series\, you can watch them here: \nJune 1 – Jesus and the First Gay Disciple \nJune 15 – The Real Reason Sodom and Gomorrah were Destroyed (link coming soon) \nJune 22 – Paul Defends Lesbians \nI will be out of the office for the next two weeks\, from July 3 – July 11. Rev. Howard will serve as our guest preacher on July 6. I will return to lead worship on July 13. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\,\nWe are continuing our Pride Sermon series with a passage in which lesbians are\ndiscussed. This is doubly-surprising because 1) the Bible rarely discusses female-\nfemale relationships\, and 2) Paul defends them. As we are seeing more and more\nhateful speech and violence tied up with religion in our country and on the very streets\nof our beloved city\, we must continue to dig deep in order to remember God’s love for all\nhumanity. We must continue to speak truth to justice. We must continue to preach\ntolerance and nonviolence amidst rising tensions and growing divisions. I sincerely hope\nyou will join us as we continue to honor Pride Month and all of the diverse of God’s\nchildren that it celebrates. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\,\nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWe are continuing with our Pride Month sermon series by tackling the story of the \ndestruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis. This story has long been \nused to justify violence against our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters by equating the \nstory incorrectly with God’s disapproval of the LGBTQ+ community. There is actually a \nlot more to the story than people often know\, and we will be unearthing a much more \naccurate interpretation that centers around hope\, peace\, and justice for the oppressed. \nThe biblical evidence may surprise you. \nWe will be following our worship with our church BBQ and potluck and we invite and \nwelcome everyone to join us. The church is providing the hamburgers\, hot dogs\, and \nbuns. We invite you to bring a side dish\, salad\, or dessert to share. Can’t bring a dish? \nCome anyway – there will be plenty of food! \nBible Study is postponed temporarily until we resume on Sunday mornings with a new \nseries in a few weeks. Stay tuned for more info! \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we celebrate Pentecost\, often called the Birthday of the Church. We will be\nreading the story from Acts in which the disciples – moved by the Holy Spirit – begin\nsharing the good news in the streets of Jerusalem\, and – despite everyone speaking\ndifferent languages – they all understand one another. This wasn’t just a miracle\, this\nwas a bold action and statement taken by the disciples that both challenged and\nfrightened the establishment. This story raises questions about salvation\, unity\, and the\npower of people coming together. \nOn Pentecost we traditionally wear red so I encourage you to wear your reddest outfits!\nWe will be taking a break from Bible Study for the next few weeks\, and will resume with\na new series on Sunday mornings at 9 AM. Please stay tuned for updates! \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\,\nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we celebrate Pride Sunday and the beginning of our Pride Month Sermon\nSeries. People often argue that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality\, but in\nfact he did. His thoughts on this give us important information on the existence and\nperception of homosexuality in ancient Greco-Roman culture. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, May 25\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday in our lead-up to Pride month\, we are asking questions about the authority \nof scripture. Some people believe that scripture is the pure\, unadulterated Word of God. \nSome people believe it is just a collection of old myths and legends. Some people \nbelieve it’s a mix. Who is right? How do we know? And where did we get these ideas in \nthe first place? It matters what we believe\, and it matters why we believe it. As usual\, \nthere are sections of scripture that speak directly to these questions\, but they have often \nbeen misinterpreted and misused. Please join us this Sunday as we take a good look at \nScripture and how it informs our interpretation through Pride Month and into the future. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, May 11
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be studying a passage from one of Paul’s letters about women who preach\, and whether they have the right\, and whether they have to cover their head when they do it. We will also be talking about Eve\, the mother of all living. What does she have to do with Paul’s treatise on preaching? A lot\, actually! Traditionally misunderstood as a passage about female submission\, Paul’s argument for equality and the inclusion of women’s voice is actually master class in rhetoric. \nWe will also be blessing all May birthdays\, anniversaries\, and sobriety dates this Sunday\, so if you or someone you know has a birthday\, come join us for a blessing. \nA special thank you to Paula and Tere for coordinating our Labyrinth Walk on May 3. We all had a lovely meditative walk followed by a picnic potluck lunch. Thank you to Laurie and Jay and Juan and Paula and Juan and everyone who brought yummy food to share! \nI will be out of the office next week to attend the Festival of Homiletics. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, May 4\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be talking about refugeeism in the Bible\, Jesus’ experience as a refugee\, and God’s promise and instructions around refugees and immigrants. There has been so much legislation and vitriol around immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers in recent months that it warrants discussion from the pulpit. How are Christians called to respond? How did the ancient prophets respond? You may be surprised at what scripture says. \nThis past Sunday Rev. Lisa shared her own experience and thoughts on the Kaiser Mental Health Worker’s strike and specifically the hunger strike that took place at our church a few weeks ago. The eleven workers who stayed at our church during the hunger strike left some lovely thank you notes for all the support that the church showed them. You can view them here. [Giselle\, can you please put in links to the pictures of the thank you notes and photo that you used in the Mission Moment last week?] \nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nSunday\, May 4 at 12:30 PM – The Youth will be shopping for our Sack Lunch. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, April 27\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nDoubting Thomas got a bad rap. I’ll just say it right now that that is what I’m going to be preaching on this coming Sunday. Usually a sub will come in on the first Sunday after Easter so you’ve never heard me talk about Doubting Thomas\, but it has always bothered me that the prevailing interpretation of this is that people who are skeptical about doctrine are somehow shameful. Well\, I disagree with that sentiment and with that interpretation. \nSo please join us this Sunday as we break down the story of Reasonably-Skeptical-Question-Asker Thomas (it’s just a working title for now\, something we’ve been kicking around the office) and learn that it may just be OK to question God and expect answers. \nThank you to everyone who helped make our Maundy Thursday service\, Easter morning service\, and Easter reception so beautiful and sacred. So many hearts and hands went into putting that together\, and I’m grateful to all of you. You can see pictures of Holy Week HERE. \nYou should know that West Hollywood United Church of Christ made it into the news. The Mental Health workers who are on strike with Kaiser held a hunger strike last week. Their story appeared on NPR and CalMatters and LAist and Los Angeles Daily News and dozens of other news outlets. Thank you to everyone who donated bedding supplies and electrolytes to their cause. You can learn more about the workers’ cause here. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n  \nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nSaturday\, May 4 at 12:30 PM – The Youth will be shopping for our Sack Lunch Program immediately following the Knitting Ministry. SUMMARY:Please Join Us For Easter Service on April 20\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nOne of the cornerstones of our faith is the resurrection of Jesus. It is both a miracle and a mystery\, but did you also know that it was revolutionary? Both the resurrection and the announcement fulfilled God’s perpetual promise of lifting the low high and bringing the high down. It is a powerful reminder of God’s agency and covenant throughout history as we are currently living in a world out of balance. \nThis Sunday we will be celebrating Easter with a special choir\, a children’s choir\, and an Easter Bonnet Parade. Please wear your fanciest Easter Bonnets and plan on joining us in the parade during worship. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy
