SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, May 4\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be talking about refugeeism in the Bible\, Jesus’ experience as a refugee\, and God’s promise and instructions around refugees and immigrants. There has been so much legislation and vitriol around immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers in recent months that it warrants discussion from the pulpit. How are Christians called to respond? How did the ancient prophets respond? You may be surprised at what scripture says. \nThis past Sunday Rev. Lisa shared her own experience and thoughts on the Kaiser Mental Health Worker’s strike and specifically the hunger strike that took place at our church a few weeks ago. The eleven workers who stayed at our church during the hunger strike left some lovely thank you notes for all the support that the church showed them. You can view them here. [Giselle\, can you please put in links to the pictures of the thank you notes and photo that you used in the Mission Moment last week?] \nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nSunday\, May 4 at 12:30 PM – The Youth will be shopping for our Sack Lunch. Our goal is to make and distribute 1000 sack lunches this year. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, April 27\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nDoubting Thomas got a bad rap. I’ll just say it right now that that is what I’m going to be preaching on this coming Sunday. Usually a sub will come in on the first Sunday after Easter so you’ve never heard me talk about Doubting Thomas\, but it has always bothered me that the prevailing interpretation of this is that people who are skeptical about doctrine are somehow shameful. Well\, I disagree with that sentiment and with that interpretation. \nSo please join us this Sunday as we break down the story of Reasonably-Skeptical-Question-Asker Thomas (it’s just a working title for now\, something we’ve been kicking around the office) and learn that it may just be OK to question God and expect answers. \nThank you to everyone who helped make our Maundy Thursday service\, Easter morning service\, and Easter reception so beautiful and sacred. So many hearts and hands went into putting that together\, and I’m grateful to all of you. You can see pictures of Holy Week HERE. \nYou should know that West Hollywood United Church of Christ made it into the news. The Mental Health workers who are on strike with Kaiser held a hunger strike last week. Their story appeared on NPR and CalMatters and LAist and Los Angeles Daily News and dozens of other news outlets. Thank you to everyone who donated bedding supplies and electrolytes to their cause. You can learn more about the workers’ cause here. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n  \nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nSaturday\, May 4 at 12:30 PM – The Youth will be shopping for our Sack Lunch Program immediately following the Knitting Ministry. SUMMARY:Please Join Us For Easter Service on April 20\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nOne of the cornerstones of our faith is the resurrection of Jesus. It is both a miracle and a mystery\, but did you also know that it was revolutionary? Both the resurrection and the announcement fulfilled God’s perpetual promise of lifting the low high and bringing the high down. It is a powerful reminder of God’s agency and covenant throughout history as we are currently living in a world out of balance. \nThis Sunday we will be celebrating Easter with a special choir\, a children’s choir\, and an Easter Bonnet Parade. Please wear your fanciest Easter Bonnets and plan on joining us in the parade during worship. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us For Palm Sunday Worship with Parade of Palms on April 13 at 11 am
DESCRIPTION:Easter week is upon us\, and we have three main worship services. This Sunday\, April 13 we will celebrate Palm Sunday\, Jesus’ triumphant (or\, actually\, less-than-triumphant) procession into Jerusalem. It was less-than-triumphant because his entry was much less regal than any previous invader\, conqueror\, or liberator. And that was a deliberate choice on his part. Partly\, this was to fulfill scripture\, but there were other important reasons that continue to ring true in today’s world. We will begin worship outside with a Parade of Palms.

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, April 13\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nIt is an absolute delight to be writing to you as your settled minister following the Installation service on March 30. Thank you to everyone who contributed and worked so hard to plan\, set up\, lead\, and plan the reception that day. It was beautiful and fun and special and I’m so grateful to everyone in this church for creating an event and a day that exceeded my wildest expectations. My family is still talking about how wonderful you all are\, and you are still talking about how much dirt they dished on me\, so I can say with certainty that a good time was had by all. \nI’d like to send out a big thank you to Rev. Howard Fauntroy for stepping in to preach so that Bruce and I could step back for a week to catch our breath before the Easter season. \nEaster week is upon us\, and we have three main worship services. \nAfter worship we will be assembling Sack Lunches and we need everyone’s help! If you can stay after worship for a bit\, please jump in and help us reach our goal of 1000 Sack Lunches this year. \nThursday\, April 17 we will be celebrating Maundy Thursday\, when we recall Jesus’ Mandate at the last Supper. We will begin with a potluck soup supper at 6 PM and then move to the sanctuary for a Tenebrae Service – the traditionally somber Service of Shadows. Please bring your soup hot if possible\, or drop it off early if it needs time to heat. We will also have a stovetop with pans for quick heat-ups as necessary in the church kitchen. \nEaster Sunday is April 20 and we will be celebrating Easter with a special choir\, a children’s choir\, and an Easter Bonnet Parade. Please wear your fanciest Easter Bonnets and plan on joining us in the parade during worship. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, March 30!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThank you for you outpouring of love and support as my husband Bruce and I mourn the passing of his beloved mother this past Sunday. She died peacefully in her sleep\, in her own bed\, surrounded by family. We have received so many flowers\, cards\, texts\, emails\, and phone calls expressing condolences and offers of help. As many of you know\, we relocated to Los Angeles in 2017 to caretake her so she could remain in her own home for as long as possible. Bruce has been by her side and adapting to her care needs every step of the way since 2017. Her health took a serious downturn last January and then rapidly declined over the past year. The past several months have been particularly exhausting as she was bed-bound and required round-the-clock care following her hospitalization in January 2025. \nI am grateful to everyone in this church for their patience\, love\, and support as her care required more and more days working from home and my schedule became wildly unpredictable. I am especially grateful to Giselle Toporkova\, Tere Riordan\, and Rev. Lisa Bove who over and over again simply caught the balls that I began dropping and stepped up to steer the ship while I was absent. Our Council – Rev. Lisa\, Janie Ito\, Rodney Chadderton\, Tom Droney\, Gary Grayson\, and Jenn Nichols – has been a rock-solid source of support and leadership as we navigated this rapidly-changing landscape. Rodney\, thank you for jumping in and preaching with less than a day’s notice. And all of our staff – Giselle\, Mark\, Randi\, Nelson\, and Tere have reassured me again and again\, “Don’t worry. We’ve got this. You take care of your family.” Knowing that every single one of you was capable\, knowledgeable\, resourceful\, and positive\, I knew that if you said you would take care of\, it would be handled very well. Over and over\, I was freed to focus on the needs at home. The value of that reassurance cannot be overstated. I am grateful for the love and support\, but I am also grateful for having an incredible church family that can come together and pitch in when needed. Thank you\, and may God bless you all. \nThis Sunday is a big day for me and a big day for the church. I am looking forward to the installation and to covenanting with all of you for our future together. My family and close friend Yasmin are all coming down from the San Francisco Bay Area for the weekend\, and I’m excited for you all to meet each other. On Sunday they will be joining us for morning worship at 11 AM. Then the plan is to head to IHOP a few blocks east on Sunset Boulevard for an informal\, no-host lunch and meet-and-greet with any church folk who want join us. The installation will begin at the church at 3 PM\, followed by a reception. \nI was encouraged to postpone the Installation this Sunday\, but so many people had set aside so much time in their schedules for months\, that I was determined to go forth this Sunday\, no matter what. Frankly\, this is really important to the church and to me\, and I don’t want to kick it down the road after so much preparation. However\, Bruce and I are running on fumes at this point. Council has graciously encouraged me to take a week of rest for bereavement following my installation on Sunday\, March 30.  It is my great hope that by taking a week for Bruce and I to catch our breath\, I will be much better restored and prepared to lead a positive Easter season. \nThis week I will be preaching the sermon I had planned for last Sunday\, on the three parables of the lost – lost coin\, lost sheep\, and prodigal son. We will not have Bible Study on Monday\, as I will be on bereavement leave. Bible Study will resume Monday\, April 8th. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \nSAVE THE DATE \nEaster Week Schedule \nApril 13 at 11 AM – Palm Sunday Worship with Parade of Palms \nApril 17 at 6 PM – Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service with Potluck Soup Supper \nApril 20 at 11 AM – Easter Worship with Easter Bonnet Parade \nOpportunities for youth \nWe are applying for a grant that will allow us to give grocery gift cards to medical workers who have been on strike for more than five months as they negotiate for better patient care and working conditions. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, March 23\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nI want to take a moment to apologize for worship last week – we started late and were unable to stream to Facebook as we had planned. This week we are trying to take the next steps to transfer from livestreaming on Facebook to gathering on Zoom and I ask for your patience as we anticipate again needing to work out some kinks. If you want to join us online in future weeks\, we ask that you register on Zoom here. \nThis week we are reading a trinity of parables about things and people lost and found. Jesus often used parables to try and describe the Realm of Heaven to people who just couldn’t imagine it. And this time\, Jesus describes it in three similar but distinct ways\, one after another. Why would He go to so much trouble over one little concept? Why repeat Himself? And more importantly\, why could the apostles ever understand these things the first time? \nJesus never did anything accidentally\, so there is much to be learned by digging into this juicy trio of the lost. Please join us this Sunday as we unpack this scripture to reveal the message of hope within. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n  \nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nWe are applying for a grant that will allow us to give grocery gift cards to medical workers who have been on strike for more than five months as they negotiate for better patient care and working conditions. DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nPlease remember that the LA Marathon will be held on Sunday\, so we will be gathering on Saturday\, instead. This SATURDAY we will be reading about Jesus’ transfiguration. This was a life-changing moment for Jesus as well as for the disciples who were there with him. Several very strange things happened all at once\, and on the surface level it reads like a very odd story.
