SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, March 9\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWe begin Lent every year by reading the story of Jesus fasting in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights\, followed by his temptation. This story is familiar and informs the Lenten tradition of giving something up. But it also gives us insights into Jesus’ feelings about empire and how he addressed the difficulty of resisting social systems that you are actively living in. Jesus’ experience is informative for Lent\, but also for our lived situation today. \nA special thank you to everyone who helped with our Ash Wednesday pancake dinner and worship service – especially Tere who did all the shopping and Cortez and Jenni who flipped a boatload of fluffy\, delicious pancakes. You can see some pictures of the evening below. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nWe are applying for a grant that will allow us to give grocery gift cards to medical workers who have been on strike for more than five months as they negotiate for better patient care and working conditions. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, March 2\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be reading a passage from Acts about the Apostle Paul’s fall from grace and restoration. While we might be tempted to think of Paul as a “bad man” who received grace and then became a “good man\,” it’s quite a bit more complicated than that. Paul was shaped by the political injustices of his time\, and civil unrest – much like what we are seeing today. What made him act so unjustly and destructively and cruelly\, and then what made him become a compassionate advocate for the gospel? Perhaps if we can get to the heart of these questions\, we can make more informed decisions ourselves as we struggle with the injustice and unrest in our society today. \nIn Bible Study on Monday at 6 PM we will be studying the story of Judith and Holofernes from the book of Judith. In this story a woman uses subversion and cunning to save her people from a destructive warlord and tells us a lot about bravery and trust when in overwhelming circumstances. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n  \nSAVE THE DATE \nOpportunities for youth \nSunday\, March 2 after worship\, the children will be shopping for the SACK LUNCH PROGRAM. \nOpportunities for service \nSunday\, March 9 after worship\, we will be assembling sack lunches and organizing lunches and clothing resources.[2025 Congregational #2 of 12:  Make 1000 Sack Lunches] \nSaturday\, March 8 from 9 AM to 12 N we will be KNITTING CAPS FOR THE HOMELESS at our Knitting Ministry and potluck brunch. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, February 23\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis Sunday we will be studying a passage from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians\, in which he talks a lot about anger. The Ephesians were angry with each other and angry at the world and angry at the government and religion. Paul needed to lessen the anger\, but his words are confusing and conflicting at first glance. However\, when we break down Paul’s advice and put it back into its proper context\, it holds wisdom that evokes both the ancient commandments and our modern conundrum. Anger is a part of our lives\, as it was in ancient Ephesus and in the desert where the people wandered for forty years. How can we use this power emotion that God has given us in fruitful ways\, but not destructive? It is a timely question and Paul has much to teach us. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis week during worship we will be reading the story of Elisha and the Widow’s Oil from the book of Kings. It is a familiar miracle story\, but it has much to teach us about communities coming together and God acting when times are tough and we feel as though nothing we can do will ever be enough. \nIn Bible Study we are still studying revolutionary women such as Jael and Judith and learning about how their out-of-the-box thoughts and actions brought us to the time of Jesus. \nPlease join us. SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, February 9\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nLast week we had an extraordinary opportunity for service. A woman and her eight year-old son reached out to Family Solutions Center. She had been working and housed\, but when a relationship ended she became displaced. Trying to care for her son and maintain employment without housing proved impossible. She was not able to maintain her employment and the situation rapidly deteriorated. By the time she made it to the Family Solutions Center\, they had been out all night sleeping in bus shelters for we don’t know how long\, and they were exhausted. Family Solutions Center had a shelter available\, but not until the next day. They called Melody at CIRCLE to ask for help\, because Melody is know as someone who gets difficult things done\, and Melody called me. “Can you help put them up somewhere tonight until they can get into their shelter tomorrow?” she asked. I am so grateful that our church is uniquely positioned to answer calls such as this. \nThis readiness is not an accident. We have spent years funding the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund\, assembling a stash of sack lunches\, and building relationships with CIRCLE and with our neighbors. Our Council Members and Treasurers have prepared our finances so that we have a church credit card to make emergency payments and purchases. Our staff is a well-oiled machine of rapid-response teamwork. \nWhen I got the call\, I was at home because my mother-in-law whom we live with and caretake had just gotten back from her third stint in the emergency room within seven days\, and she needed constant care.  I had very little time and no way to go up to the church at that point. I called our neighbor who I know – the manager of the hotel two doors down from the church – on her cell phone\, and explained the situation. She said she would be “absolutely delighted” to take in the mother and son. Because she knows me\, she waved the requirement that we be there in person to sign the credit card authorization form\, and I just texted her a picture of my ID and the church credit card. Giselle called to make the arrangements and they said that the mother and son could come immediately\, they did not have to wait until check-in time at 4 PM. The proximity of the hotel to the church made it easy for CIRCLE to drop them off and to have help nearby at our church if anything came up. Giselle had the authorization and means to get them any additional supplies they needed\, as she deemed necessary. Within an hour\, the family was off the street and in shelter. \nWhen the wildfires hit Los Angeles last month\, there was much talk about how our churches and denomination in Southern California don’t have a Disaster Response Plan. But the reality is\, we at WeHo UCC do. I remember when I first started and was trying to make arrangements for situations like these. Tere and Giselle and I would scramble for hours trying to find a motel for folks\, calling shelters\, driving around in the dark to pick up fast food\, trying to figure out how to transport folks to places all over the city\, hoping I had enough cash in my bank account to pay for the room and then get reimbursed from the church weeks later\, and dropping everything to drive across town to check in so we could sign the credit card authorization form in person. What a difference a couple of years make. Last week I made a couple of phone calls\, and our team of staff\, neighbors\, and CIRCLE created a solution even though I couldn’t be there in person or help in any way. It is raining as I write this and I am relieved to know that a mother and her eight-year-old son are warm and dry and indoors\, not freezing and soaking wet at a bus stop in the middle of the night. As of today\, this mother and son have been sheltered since last week at the Bailey Shelter and they are on track with the Family Housing Program to be in permanent housing soon. I have lost count of the number of people we have helped off the street and into permanent housing. \nAt West Hollywood United Church of Christ\, Our Mission statement is simple: \n No Condemnation here! We are a Loving Community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice. \nOne of our core values is: \nWe are an intentional community of compassion and love. We know that it is often difficult to find community in an impersonal city. We seek to be an intentional community built upon Jesus’ values of care\, compassion\, service\, justice\, and support for one another. \nWe live out our values through action every day\, and it is because all of you work together that makes stories like this possible. Every week\, we strive to be able to say\, “We don’t just talk the talk\, we walk the walk.” \nThis Sunday we will be reading the parable of the sower from the gospel of Matthew. In times like this\, Jesus’ words and example inform and encourage what we are doing\, regardless of what craziness happening around the world. In this story\, Jesus quotes from Isaiah who was in his own whirlwind of political drama. Their words and actions have much to teach us. \nThis Sunday we will also be blessing all of the February birthdays and anniversaries\, and after worship we will be assembling sack lunches. Special thanks to Mavery for single-handedly shopping for supplies for 100 sack lunches last Sunday. They filled two shopping carts! \nAt Bible Study this Monday we will be studying two brave and unorthodox women from the Bible: Jael and Judith. \nThis month we are also beginning to organize around our Twelve Goals for 2025. Watch for more info in our upcoming newsletters\, during worship\, and on our website. \nFinally\, there have been repeated requests for Pledge Forms\, so I am attaching one here. If you sign up for recurring payments through our website\, we count that as a pledge. But for those who love the smell of ink and paper\, we will have printed copies available in the sanctuary or you can email our office and we will mail one to you. \nSAVE THE DATE \nPastor Tracy’s Installation will be Sunday\, March 30\, 2025 at 3 PM in the Sanctuary. Reception to follow. \nPlease scroll down for more upcoming events. \nWe will look forward to seeing you there! \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Southern California Nevada Conference\, United Church of Christ Registration Links
DESCRIPTION:Enough Trouble\n\n Rachael Pryor \n January 31\, 2025 \n\n  \n  \nAs I travel the highways and valleys of this beautiful Conference\, I often describe my basic driving safety strategy as “not going faster than the car in front of me.” This dry humor has evolved into a metaphor for daily life in my role as Conference Minister. Dreaming about the possibilities for the future can be energizing; but when we’re overwhelmed by the present moment\, the future can feel like more of a burden than an opportunity. I often find myself worrying about whether we are doing enough\, especially because I’m so inspired by our capacity as a Conference\, and in our Associations and Local Churches. “We should be doing more\,” plays in the back of my mind like a broken record. \nWhat I say to you is also a reminder to myself: we are doing enough. We are doing what we can. We are working hard\, every day\, to serve more people\, to seek more justice\, and to love our neighbors.  We are doing this work with partners from diverse faith and non-profit communities at our sides and often out in front of us. That doesn’t mean we don’t keep learning and growing; but it might mean that we agree to set reasonable goals and give ourselves grace. “Stop worrying about tomorrow\,” Jesus told the disciples\, “because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matt. 6:34 CEB) \nI suspect many of us are feeling the truth of that last sentence very keenly in this moment. Thanks be to God for the prophetic statements being shared by clergy and activists\, including this letter on freedom to express our faith\, by our own General Minister and President\, Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson. A bold\, clear witness is crucial in this moment\, even if these are so often statements we’ve already made over and over. \nIn our Conference\, that witness is a continuation of the Just World Covenants we’ve already made. We don’t all have to issue daily statements. We don’t have to respond to every hateful quip or executive order. Instead\, let our ministry be our statement\, as your ministries have been for me in the past weeks: the queer clergy support cohorts you lead\, the workshops you’ve attended on protective strategies for dealing with ICE\, the wildfire aid efforts you’re coordinating with BIPOC communities and families; the neighbors you feed and the camp session you are planning and the anthems of love and peace you are singing in the face of fear and hatred! Prophetic witness doesn’t just happen in Statehouse and on the street; it’s also present in the way our Committees on Ministry supports transgender clergy and Members in Discernment; and in the way our Conference Board prioritizes grant opportunities. \nI don’t think I have to tell you about the danger of trying to do too much\, too fast: we crash.  We run on empty tanks until we stall out. As people who tend to worry that we are moving too slowly\, we also need to be attentive to opportunities to rest. To refuel. Sometimes\, to make more room to learn and listen before we act.  If nothing else\, our wildfire emergency response has taught me that there can be such a thing as too much help. Instead of rushing in\, let’s take a breath. Let’s make a plan. We’re not in this work alone\, and we don’t have to do it all.  We are enough for this moment\, and we will keep hope alive\, one day at a time. \nJoin in for a Sanctuary & Rapid Response Training! The Biden administration had instituted a policy prohibiting immigration arrests at “sensitive locations\,” including schools\, hospitals\, and places of worship. \nTrump has repealed that policy through one of his executive orders\, but the history of sanctuary is much deeper than this Biden-era policy. Many CLUE-affiliated congregations remain interested in offering sanctuary to those who seek it. This training is geared towards these congregations. \nRSVP at: bit.ly/cluesanctuary \nAs a part of the programming for Black History Month\, the Gailen and Cathy Reevers Center for Community Empowerment\, Inc. and Lincoln Memorial United Church of Christ are hosting a Virtual Health Equity Presentation on “The Potential Impact on CA Health Care Under the Trump Administration.” Join Dr. Dylan Roby\, Chair and Professor of Health\, Society and Human Behavior at UCI for an informational conversation. The event will be held on Sunday February 16 from 2:00-3:00PM PT. Registration is required. \nDo you have a heart for extending emotional and spiritual care to the spiritual caregivers who are serving in disaster-affected communities? The UCC’s Emotional and Spiritual Care Team is a program of Disaster Ministries. We support spiritual caregivers serving at the local church\, association\, and conference levels\, as they provide pastoral care to their impacted communities. Disaster Ministries is looking to amplify this ministry. To that end\, they are inviting applicants to be a part of this important ministry. They welcome trained pastoral care providers\, parish nurses\, counselors\, chaplains\, clergy\, and others feeling the call to disaster emotional and spiritual care to apply for this volunteer position. \nWinter Camp at The Pines offers a special opportunity for our campers to take a break from their busy lives and recharge. At Winter Camp\, participants will have the chance to get creative in the craft lodge\, play games with friends\, laugh\, sing\, dance\, and indulge in tasty s’mores! This year’s theme focuses on the idea of belonging. What does it mean to truly belong? How can we help others feel supported and included? \nWinter Camp creates a welcoming community where everyone can experience a sense of belonging\, have fun\, and enjoy the mountain’s joyful atmosphere. Plentiful camperships are available\, but time is running short! Registration closes Feb. 8. \nInterfaith Youth Alliance invites all high school students (grades 9–12) to join the 18th Annual Faith Forum and Festival\, bringing together more than 150 students from diverse faiths and backgrounds to engage in meaningful dialogue. The Faith Forum fosters conversations on shared topics among individuals with differing perspectives and experiences. Through this dialogue\, they aim to build constructive relationships that positively impact our communities and places of worship. More information can be found here. \nOver and over again\, the Bible tells of prophets who confronted rulers and the rich with an eye toward justice. Today\, the ultra-rich hold enormous political power in the United States\, and the implications are significant\, especially when it comes to the pursuit of climate justice. \nRegister to attend this webinar on February 12 at 10:00AM PST\, or receive a link of the recorded program to watch at your convenience: bit.ly/OligarchyWebinar \nFor the third straight year\, the UCC is conducting a Climate Hope Art Contest. The theme this year is “Planting Seeds of Hope.” UCC children and youth are invited to draw\, paint\, or color works of art that bring this theme to life. Art submissions will be accepted from February 2 to March 14. An online award ceremony for finalists will be held on April 5. In the ceremony\, winners will be announced for different age groups and an overall winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip to visit Washington\, DC with a parent or guardian. The winner will advocate with the offices of their congress members\, tour the Capitol\, and learn how they can bring their faith values to life in the halls of power. The winning art will additionally serve as the logo for UCC Climate Hope advocacy work throughout 2025. More information can be found here. \nWhy take an unnecessary risk? Join expert Christy Schiller on Tuesday\, February 25 for United Church of Christ Insurance Board’s webinar ‘Safe Conduct 2025: New Research and Best Practices.’ Learn about the current landscape of safe conduct practices and abuse prevention\, including new research\, ongoing challenges\, and best practices to protect our ministries. \nChristy brings more than 20 years of industry experience to this program\, applying social science and public health strategies to prevent abuse and its long-term effects. In her role at Praesidium\, Christy has developed customized solutions for complex organizations such as religious \ninstitutes and denominations\, fraternal \norganizations\, K12 schools\, and healthcare \nsystems. She has worked with clients globally. Click here for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, January 26\, 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nThis month\, Giselle will be sending out your giving statements for 2024\, and I have asked her to attach this letter. We strive to keep accurate records\, but we are only human. If you see something amiss\, please let the office know immediately so that we can address it. These statements detail the contributions that you have made to West Hollywood United Church of Christ. But they detail so much more\, and I want to take a moment to thank you. These giving statements show your commitment\, your values\, and your generosity. At WeHo UCC\, we have a simple mission statement: \nNo Condemnation here! \nWe are a Loving Community embracing Christ’s spirit and justice. \nWeHo UCC has long been a bright light of progressive theology in the community. We are a safe place for those who have been harmed by other churches. We are reaching out in our neighborhoods in partnerships and with our sack lunch program to help our homeless and low-income neighbors. In 2024 – thanks to our youth – we made and distributed 500 sack lunches and their goal for 2025 is 1000. We helped numerous people in crisis – finding shelter\, preventing evictions\, providing diapers and shelter to homeless families\, buying emergency groceries\, counseling folks facing anti-gay discrimination in their churches\, and supporting refugees. We even took a homeless man and his dog to the vet to be vaccinated so that he could get off the streets and into shelter and keep his dog with him. \nOur Bible Study classes teach rigorous contextual interpretation that continuously reveals God’s good news and love for all humanity. Our worship services are spiritually grounded\, fun\, and engaging. Our Knitting Ministry gathers monthly for fellowship\, food\, and to make warm knitted caps for the homeless in our community. Our Prayer Group meets weekly to gather the concerns of our church folk as well as the community and the world. Our Care Team and Coffee Hour Hosts reach out and welcome all people into fellowship at home and after worship. \nWhen we strive to Love our Neighbors as Ourselves\, we take this as a call to action. \nAll of this is possible because of people like you. Thank you so much for all you have done and all you continue to do to support West Hollywood UCC with your time\, talent\, and treasure. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. \nMany blessings\, \nPastor Tracy

SUMMARY:Sack Lunch Program
DESCRIPTION:Last week the air quality near/in the church was not at levels safe enough to gather in person\, so we were not able to assemble sack lunches. Food for our homeless neighbors is an acute need\, so if you are free\, please plan on helping assemble sack lunches after worship (12:30 PM) this Sunday\, January 16th. If you would like to contribute to the lunches\, we can always use non-perishable\, easy-to open (pop-top)\, nutritious food. Cans of chili\, protein-rich soups\, beef ravioli\, tuna fish\, fruits\, vegetables\, granola bars\, and bottles of water are all in constant demand and can be dropped off at the church generally during regular business hours. Please call or text me at 323-793-9059 first to make sure someone is there to let you in before you arrive to drop off donations. Our youth also go shopping for the lunches every month and you can contribute to the grocery fund here.

SUMMARY:Please Join Us This Sunday\, January 19\, 2025 in person or on Facebook!
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends in Christ\, \nWe are in a liminal state right now as West Hollywood UCC is slowly returning to normal\, but the wildfires in Los Angeles are still actively burning. The Sunset Fire that threatened the church last week has been extinguished and our Church Council has been monitoring the air quality levels for the past several days. The air quality has been consistently safe\, so the church has been aired out and our Council allowed the building be reopened\, so Giselle and I returned this past week. \nThis Sunday\, January 19\, 2025 we are planning on worshiping in person\, barring any additional disasters. Our Council is encouraging people to wear masks as they desire for their own comfort and safety. \nPlease CLICK HERE to join us on Facebook. \nWe will also have Bible Study on Monday evening at 6 PM and plan to return to our regularly-scheduled activities. \nBear in mind\, however\, that the Palisades\, Eaton\, and Hurst fires in Los Angeles are still actively burning. The Altadena fire has left devastation that will take years of rebuilding to overcome. \nIn the past week I have met twice with Rev. Rachael Pryor\, the Conference Minister of our Southern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ\, Rev. Katie Howe of our National UCC Disaster Ministries\, and with many of the other clergy in the Los Angeles area\, including Rev. Paul Tellström of Altadena United Church of Christ. \nWe have repeatedly learned that the number of people simply wanting to check in\, ask for updates\, and offering to help is overwhelming and making it difficult for those affected to deal with their own safety and mental health. One minister received over 400 text messages and Facebook messages in a single day that all required a response. When people didn’t get a timely response\, many texted back asking why the delay\, which brought the total to 600+ messages. For someone who is in an emergency shelter\, grieving\, suffering from smoke inhalation\, and has lost everything\, this creates a stressful\, impossible situation. Please be patient and know that your help and offers of support and concern will be needed and appreciated but many folks can’t help you coordinate that right now. \nI have let the minister of Altadena UCC know that we at WeHo UCC are here for them in whatever way we can be of support or service\, but that he doesn’t have to respond until and unless he thinks of something we can help with. He thanked us\, and now we will patiently and graciously wait until called. \nAlso\, most of the work and help will be needed weeks or months from now\, long after the crisis has faded from the news. West Hollywood UCC is committed to the long-term recovery efforts and I will let you know how we can help in the upcoming months. \nThe UCC Disaster Ministries has put out a national appeal for recovery funds\, and those will be managed by our SCNV conference\, who is working directly with affected churches\, evacuees\, and reputable organizations to get them what they need. Click here if you want to donate to that fund which will stay local and be administrated by local UCC churches in LA County who are on the ground helping with the recovery efforts. \nRight now what people need most is fairly-priced\, temporary (1-3 years) housing. We are already seeing landlords raise their rents in anticipation of evacuees having no other choice. Bear in mind that if someone has lost their home or place of business\, there may be no going back\, and they will be relocating permanently\, or perhaps for years if they are waiting to rebuild. If you know of a fairly-priced housing option for evacuees\, let me know so we can get it to people who need it. You can always call or text me at 323-793-9059. \nLast week the air quality near/in the church was not at levels safe enough to gather in person\, so we were not able to assemble sack lunches.
