Dear friends in Christ,
Every Sunday in churches around the world, candles are lit to represent the presence of
the Holy Spirit. When Moses saw the burning bush, the Spirit of God appeared in the
form of a flame. In this moment, Moses also hears God identify Godself and command
Moses to liberate the Israelites from the yoke of the Egyptians. There is a lot going on in
this passage, but at the heart of it is God calling upon a most unlikely person to help
manifest God’s kin-dom here on earth. God is faced with a suffering population, and
Moses is faced with a choice. This passage has as much to teach us about God’s
agency in our world as it does about our agency in God’s plans.
In Bible Study after worship, we will be continuing our study of the Gospel of Matthew,
Chapters 5-7; Jesus’ sermon on the mount. This week we will be focusing on Matthew
5:23-30 and we will be making candles as a spiritual discipline following Matthew 5:14-
16.
