Dear friends in Christ,
On the heels of Jesus’ baptism, he and John the Baptist leap into action. John keeps pointing out Jesus and telling the story of their calls. With John’s help, Jesus immediately begins gathering disciples. Amidst all of this activity, everyone begins acquiring new names: the Voice, the Word, the Lamb of God, the Baptist, the Rock, the Messiah. And we see familiar images such as the dove, the rock, the river, the lamb, and the fire. None of this is accidental, and none of this is insignificant. These images
carry powerful meanings and traditions, as do the names that are revealed and bestowed. As we began to learn last Sunday when we read about Jesus’ baptism, this river and this moment is a liminal space where people are transformed and God is revealed. Please join us this Sunday as we unpack these ancient symbols and learn how God is continue to reveal our discipleship and our names today.
A special thanks to Jim and all of the folks who helped us to sort and stow our Christmas decorations last week so that we can start the New Year with a fresh, clear sanctuary and fellowship hall. You can see photos of the efforts captured by Nemo here.
A special thanks to Janette and our youth and all of our volunteers who stayed late to help pack sack lunches. Our goal this year is 1500 sack lunches made and distributed. This past Sunday, with everyone’s help, we assembled 132 sack lunches! Special thanks to Nemo, who took many wonderful photos of the assembling, and you can view them here.
This Saturday, January 17th we will be walking the labyrinth at Forest Lawn Cemetery and enjoying a brown bag picnic lunch afterward. Please call or text 323-793-9059 no later than Friday night if you would like to join the carpool leaving the church at 12:00 Noon.
