Dear friends in Christ,

When Jesus overturned the tables at the temple, driving out the dove-sellers and the money changers, his actions appear angry, targeted, even violent. On the surface, his actions make little sense in light of his message of peace and community. But there is more to this story than Jesus simply losing his temper. There are historical, geographical, and political powers at play long before Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. What we are seeing is Jesus attempting to neutralize oppression and re-balance the powers

of church and state. Jesus’ anger and his action have a lot to teach us about responding to long-standing systems of injustice – both the cost and the reward, and God’s role in history. Please join us as we dig deep into this story to find the message of God’s hope, peace, and beloved community.
